Wow. So what happened? Frog, you are saying Max paid up? I would assume that Cal Preps was using Maxes data to calculate point spreads, no? Max probably detected their bot and sued?
Anyway, I though Cal Preps just totaled points scored and points given up to come up with a point spread. Sadly, Max Preps is the only one that collects that data, no? Or is it the other way around and Cal Preps collects it? And, from the way it appears to me, is they do it by loyal fans etc. CIF should publish the data and be the trusted source, IMO. They do have a search function, but it is harder to harvest the info.

Calpreps is back. Looks like Maxpreps/CBS paid up. claiming temporary return for this week...., maybe just a squeeze to see if they can barter a better deal, will Calpreps have any negotiating power? Where do you see that? The only message I see is "We have reached a quick resolution with MaxPreps, and the full site information will return in time for this weekend"

Usually I try to put our game selects up on Tuesday, w/ the issues at hand, I will wait till tomorrow to see if we get CP back up before I post the game selections. That said, if there are any other projection sites please lmk! Being we are in our new leagues, and those leagues have evenly matched teams, I think I can do a decent job of picking games and assigning a spread. I kept open the URL to the MP rankings so I can see some ratings. Other option is to skip this week.
Dang, two good games on Thursday night....., lets see how today looks @ CP by this afternoon.

It is a lot of work, but you could total the scores each team scored, subtract them and get a point spread that way. Cal Preps also subtracted the points given up, which is a little work. So if team A scored a total of 200 point this season so far, but gave up 150 points, their score would be 50, but if team B scored 150 points total, but gave up 25, their total points would be 125 points. So team B would be favored by 75 points. That is a lot of work, especially for someone working a job and no spare time. But if all else fails, it can be done.

They do have a search function, but it is harder to harvest the info. Good questions, Bill. (1) Calpreps uses a rating algorithm developed by Ned Freeman about 40 years ago, and refined continuously since. They determine their point spreads primarily from those ratings. Maxpreps just uses the Calpreps ratings as their own. I think that may be why they owe Calpreps some money. (2) When it comes to quality control and integrity of their data, Maxpreps is a joke. Any 12-year-old with average computer skills can get on Maxpreps and edit the information there. Our stats guy spends have his life correcting information that regularly appears on that site, with no help from Maxpreps as to where it came from. Just last week our game schedule showed that we lost to a school named CSAS the night before we played Kahuku in Hawaii. (3) The CIF should not publish any data. When it comes to accuracy and quality of data, they are the one site that may be worse than Maxpreps.

Interesting, I would think that CIF would have the best info. I was thinking that they got their info from the officials at the game?
As per Max Preps. This is why I said what I said about Cal Preps - They are the ones that shut down. I hadn't seen point spreads on Max Preps, so I assumed the only place to get them was Cal Preps. And since they were the ones shut down, It made sense that they got their info from Max Preps, BUT if Cal Preps has been around so long... They must have a way to get the real raw scores. I wonder how? Ideas?
Also, one time I took the data like I mentioned in the previous post and totaled the points scored minus given up for the teams one week and discovered they were the point spreads provided by Cal Preps. So why go through all of that work if Cal Preps provided the spread already.
Anyway, it is interesting. Thanks for you input MD. I am still curious how Cal Preps gets their data.

Bill, have you not used, viewed or navigated Calpreps? Like MDDad explained they have a deep set of algos, stats, rolling avgs., history, that all gets input to the rankings and also the spreads, called "projections". MaxPreps, which is national and the go to for all HS sports just uses and abbreviated amount of info Calpreps generates. I saved the URLS before the shutdown, so I can get into the pages that are still working, if you just go to Calpreps.com you will not be able to navigate from there. So here, take a look at the rankings calpreps.com/2024/ratings/Southern_all.htmNow if you want to find a spread, projection click "TREND" on any team within the rankings. It will show you that teams schedule, wins, quality of win, namely performance. Also the power rank of each team they played. Its not as easy as your points for/against formula, a team will have a lot of points if its SOS is inferior to an upcoming opponent. Calpreps takes all this in and makes a better calculation. Here is the Yorba Linda @ Villa Park game, Calpreps predicts VP by 1 point, so for our pool I would make it 1.5 to avoid ties/push. calpreps.com/cgi-bin/2024/trend.pl?school=Yorba_Linda_(CA)I think Calpreps does outstanding work, and I think it's very stat driven. These are not "Expert Picks" or Vegas spreads. Since I can see behind the homepage w/ my link, are we good to go and pick the 5 games? LMK

Good news SK. I am still curious where Cal Preps gets their data? As per the spreads, like I said, a couple years ago I added the points like I described and came up with the exact spreads they did.
