Why does a person have to know anything about it to enjoy it? They don't. It either tastes good or it doesn't. No, there are shades between, above and below. I don't need to know what kind of flour the pasta is made of to enjoy a nice cacio e pepe or pappardelle ragu. You don't but some do, the nuances of life are colorful, enjoyable and interesting.

It either tastes good or it doesn't. No, there are shades between, above and below. I agree. But you said good bourbon shouldn't be wasted on those whose palates are not sophisticated (or snooty?) enough to appreciate them, and I don't buy that. My son has a palate for beers, bourbons and Scotches that is world class. If someone walks past an aging barrel of Scotch with a pineapple, he can taste it in the booze a year later. He can talk of these notes and those notes in a tasting 'til the cows come home. I just know whether I love it, like it, it's OK, or it sucks. Neither opinion is more valuable than the other.

I agree that knowing more about the terroir of wine, for instance, adds to my personal enjoyment of it for whatever reason.
But taste is taste, snobbery notwithstanding.

We had a below average grape harvest but a huge peach harvest. My wife will be making some peach wine, peach vinegar, peach... peach ... peach... I'll test the wine...

We have so many peaches, and they were all from one tree.

Enjoyed a bottle of RY3 from Virginia. Came in hot at 59.2%, but really liked it.

Our peach wine is stronger than the grape wine.
