But he only pitched for 20 more seasons after 1974, though. Wimp.

As a father of little kids, I second this statement.

Gordie Howe debuted for the Detroit Redwings in the 1946-1947 season.

Note the multiple lack of helmets...

Loved the yellow uniform pants on those 70's Redskins.

If you didn't feel old enough already. And here's another one: nobody in high school today was born before 9/11.

Young was great for his time, but have you ever seen old films of those guys pitch? Our college softball pitchers throw harder.

That's the cool thing about legends. They're measured against their peers in the Era.

Seems we had different priorities back in those days.

Ted Williams also missed almost 2 entire seasons for the Korean War, also. When you figure out the average homerun production he had during those almost 5 seasons, there is a good chance he would have passed Babe Ruth in career home runs.
He finished with 521 and averaged 37 home runs per year for his career. Because of the Korean War he had only 14 home runs in the interrupted '52 and '53 seasons. If you give him 185 home runs for those seasons and subtract the 14 he did hit (in '52 and '53) he would have wound up with 695 and may have been tempted to play one more year to set the all time record. (In his last year he still hit .316 with 29 home runs)...........................Luca
