Helluva day we're having so far...
I just love reading about Christian "hate" groups called Focus on the Family. So today, anyone who supports family values, and is a member of the NRA, just became a terrorist homophobe. Is that a capital crime yet?

Literally speaking, a "Homophobe" is someone who is afraid of gay people. I don't believe either of those men are afraid of Bruce or any of his pals, unless one of the said pals is a 300lb lineman in the shower with them.

You are right about the definition, but they aren’t interested in the appropriate use of words. they are only interested in threatening people with whom they disagree. |

Literally speaking, a "Homophobe" is someone who is afraid of gay people. You know, RSM, that term has always annoyed the hell out of the purist in me. I was compelled by those patriarchal, fascist Jesuit Men-in-black to take 2 years of Latin in high school and while after 2 years I still wouldn’t have been able to order lunch in Latin, I did understand some Latin roots. " Homo-" means “man” as in “mankind”, “humanity”, etc. The suffix “ -phobe” means “fear of” or “hatred of”. Technically the neologism “ homophobe” should refer to somebody who hates or fears mankind, similar to the term “misanthrope”. I think some partially educated, neophyte Latin pseudo-scholar formulated it to mean someone who hates "homos" (which he - or she, or z - thought referred to "homosexuals"), my ultimate seventh-grade schoolyard insult of last resort. It's exactly the type of thing that someone would do when trying to utilize a trite insult but sound sophisticated doing it. Sorry for the digression. I agree Luca. What I have also found annoying is the claim by many on the left that those who don't like gay people or who don't approve of engaging in homosexual behavior, are actually repressed homosexuals themselves. So in their mind, there are only 2 types of people - Straight people who condone homosexuality and gay people.
Very small thinking.

I get e-mails from Focus On The Family all the time. They do not promote hate at all. They disagree with the left when it comes to homosexuality and to the NY Times eyes that's hate. |
