In order to really get a handle on this subject, I think it's important to better understand what the differences are between moderate democrats, liberals, and leftists...and NOT just lump them all into the same bucket. We will find out in 2020 where "moderate democrats" go.., cuz I know where liberals and leftists will......

IMO they feel mentally and socially superior. We who don't agree with them are stupid or some how evil so our ideas should not be listened to. Our point of view can never be heard and it's their job to keep us from speaking in public. I see them as angry and entitled.

What about moderate Democrats or liberals? Do you think they also believe the same?

Do you included leftists and liberals into the "Progressive" movement? If so only the moderates are on the outside.

I don't know if they are distinct groups. I believe they are, which is why I don't want to lump them all in the same bucket the way non-liberals seem to get lumped into the Trumpista bucket.

Hadn't spent much time thinking about it, but if you held a gun to my head, I'd say a liberal would want to provide more social services at some moderate incremental tax increase. A leftist would be more radical, and want to transform the country into a much more centrally controlled / globalist version of itself.

I agree with your take on liberals, although I think they favor globalism also. I think leftist would include progressives and socialists who want central government control over everything, including controlling speech, how much money one can make, what we eat, how we worship, how we act. They want globalism, and income redistribution both nationally, and internationally. They want everyone to be of one mind. Eventually will they try to control our thoughts too? Will they outlaw religion? They have gotten so ridiculous about denying the biological sex of individuals, and I wonder what nonsense we'll see in the future. They are so far off the deep end, that I wouldn't put it past them in the future, to begin to tell our grandchildren, or our grandchidren's grandchildren who they can marry, based on skin color trying to produce a more homogeneous population. Can't happen you say? Are you as sure about that as you once were, say 20 years ago?

My concern / question is whether or not they represent the mainstream democrat, or if the notoriety is more a function of the sensationalism that comes with being an extremist. I want to believe the true condition is like the bell-shaped curve with the majority of the democrats being a lot closer to the middle.

Please explain what you believe is the difference between a liberal and a leftist. Some good comments on this from Bick and the Professor, which I would largely echo. The Leftists are radicals, and are currently ascendant in the Democratic Party. They are motivated by identity politics, groupthink, opposition to free speech, disdain for capitalism, and hatred for both Christianity and America's past. The following article by Dennis Prager from 2017 does a good job of explaining the difference between Leftism and Liberalism. I have also included his Prager U. video and another short video from Dave Rubin, a self-identifying liberal who has become alarmed in the past couple years by the illiberalism of what he calls the "regressive Left."
