Happy Feast of the Epiphany! (The Twelfth Day of Christmas) Credo, Nice photo and song about the Epiphany. "Little Christmas" we always called it. But, I have a question for you about the January1st Holy Day of Obligation...the "Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God." I went to Catholic schools for 10 years, and I have no recollection of ever hearing about that one. How is this possible? Is it new? was it called something else before? For someone who attended a high school run by the Order of the Servants of Mary, I am puzzled. I, of course, know about the Assumption, and about the Immaculate Conception holy days of obligation, but this Solemnity holy day I don't recall. What do you think...Alzheimers?

Back in your day January 1 was called the Feast of the Circumcision (eighth day after the birth of Jesus). At some point after Vatican II it was renamed the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. Not sure when it became a Holy Day of Obligation, though in a number of dioceses (like L.A.) the bishop often waves the obligation. We always have Mass at Servite on holy days such as the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception, as well as Ash Wednesday and various Servite feast days.

Thank You for that info Credo...I feel better. By the way, I got into a brief altercation at that Mass, with the head of "Liturgy and Music." I asked him, "How in the world, in a Mass to honor Mary, do we not sing even one hymn to her?" His only answer was basically, "Go away, I'm busy." Feeling that I made my point, I left it at that.
