I feel like I'm the protagonist of a Franz Kafka novel with all these bizarre counterintuitive behaviors going on, and start to wonder if common sense actually applies anymore.
When this all blows over - as I strongly believe it will without a whole lot of medical damage - I would bet that there are going to be two scenarios: one will involve a lot of finger pointing about who panicked and who overreacted and the panic wasn't worth it all for what turned out to be not-such-an-apocalyptic pandemic. The other will be posturing by those who insist the reason it turned out not to be a big deal is because we listened to them and closed Disneyland, major league baseball and the Swallows Festival in San Juan Capistrano, etc.
In the meantime I can only think of one person whom I can see benefiting from all this and that is Warren Buffet and those with significant investments in Berkshire Hathaway. He has for a few years been looking for some big purchases but has been saving his money waiting until he finds what he considers great opportunities. BH has something like $20 billion or more saved up for prospective investments and the next few weeks/months are the time to buy with the stock market plunging
Meanwhile I'm going to be really pissed if I can't find any toilet paper anywhere...........................Luca

I saw an interesting graph this morning of the numbers of reported cases. China has almost completely leveled off at about 81,000, so despite all the negative press, it appears they've done a decent job of getting a handle on this thing. The rest of the world is rising almost vertically and now has about 64,000 cases. That number should catch and pass the Chinese in the next few days.
Because of their antiquated health care, the country that could be decimated by this whole thing is Iran, and I think they must know it. I can't help but wonder would happen if Donald Trump called Ali Khamenei and Hassan Rouhani and simply asked, "What can America do to help?" It might be a big win for Trump regardless of their response.

The mortality rate for this virus is quoted at about 2% but I believe it’s less than that. By definition, “decimate” means destruction of 10%. Mathematically it does not add up and I don’t see how this kind of a viral epidemic can do any significant long lasting damage...................Luca

It might be a big win for Trump regardless of their response. Not just Iran, but pretty much the entire Middle East outside of Israel, but including especially India. All of these countries have the worst air pollution and presumably highly susceptible people, but a severe lack of capacity to enforce some of the restrictions our “freedoms” allow us.
