I have become really accustomed to Bick's style of moderating a forum, to the point I believe I have become spoiled.
As a comparison, I am a member of another forum where the owner is a bit of a tyrant and one of his moderators is a henchman. The owner wants to be recognized as a an expert in the field, which of course is a Bat-signal to me to point out every time he is incorrect. His henchman is a thin skinned person who really enjoys his power, so again, I choose to push his buttons. What can I say, I'm an idiot.
So a couple of weeks back, I used the word "poach" to describe how a certain business was started. The owner of a new company hired about 85% of an existing companies talent as he started, which I described as poaching. The henchman said there was nothing illegal about what the new business person did and that it happens all the time. Apparently, the henchman thought "poaching" was only defined in the way it corresponds to wildlife, where it is illegal to poach game or fish. I pointed out the business definition of the word was an apt description of what was done, the recruitment of existing talent as opposed to cultivating talent on ones own. His response was to suggest I was a little too wrapped up in the subject matter and that I should stop posting.
This past week, a new & apparently younger member started a thread about a subject where he was obviously naive. Nothing negative about the thread or author, he just didn't really understand what he was posting about. Well, the henchman makes the first response and comes back with a rude, snarky post. The OP replied along the lines of "why are you taking this so personal, I don't even know you", which received an even harsher attack from the henchman. I jumped in and responded to the OP "Don't worry about the henchman, his birth name is Richard and he sometimes is a little grumpy".
About an hour later, I get a note saying my account is on probation for "showing disrespect to a Moderator". The henchman includes a short note saying this probation is permanent and I better watch it, I'm on thin ice. So of course I can't let that be, I write him a PM in which I saw his response to the new guy deserves him being put on probation. I told the henchman he was often rude & drunk with power and that I bet he didn't act like that in real life, else he would get his ass handed to him on a regular basis. Within hours, I got another notice from him that my account was suspended for a week, again due to disrespect to a moderator.
Listen, I know I can be a handful and that there are times I should be more Luca like. Luca & MDDad did a good job of handling a fascist moderator like JQP, I know they would have handled this situation much better than I. But as I get older, I just don't have time for folks who abuse their power and are basically little fascist punks. I'm not saying they had no right to suspend my account, heck, it is there site, they can do what they want. I should take solace in knowing that in time, continued behavior like that will result in what has happened to TOB, it becomes a ghost town.
I think I wanted to voice this to expound on a couple of beliefs of mine. First, outside of the military, respect is not deserved based on the position you hold, but rather on the way you treat people. Second, power really reveals a persons true integrity.

RSM789..., instead here Bick & Crew have used their inbox capabilities to really do a group think on issues like banning someone, I attest, it would take a massive F-UP to get banned from our site here. I beleieve all of us agree that TOB fails because its tries to stand on "Bring any take how wrong it may be" (paraphrase) yet if the "Mods" and "Owners" don't like nor agree with it down it or you go. I post on occasion over there and TWO posts have been removed this past couple of weeks. I think what we have here is more of a"Co-Op", kinda similar to the way we see our politics, self govern. As for poaching, thats another topic we have a long track record with in many a thread....., just ask the Dad from MD "Who Poached Who"! Personally, I can't see should I own a board a reason to ban someone like you, although your "BRADY HATER" posts are close for grounds!

You cannot possibly be surprised by hypocrites in the moderator/owner ranks: This “double secret probation” is exactly what you’ve transgressed in the past and what ended my reign there as most prolific poster, ever.
We’ve known for a decade some moderators make up rules as they go along and, most often, in fact almost exclusively applied to those more intelligent and balanced than he is and, therefore, hated.

"There is no passion like that of a functionary for his function."
I forgot who said that once but it’s fitting in your situation. These boards are not life itself although we sometimes tend to get too wrapped up in them. We take things too seriously and spend time thinking about the disputes when we should be doing something far more important. A moderator has those issues and then has the additional power to control everybody else’s comments. Some people just cannot handle it. There was another quote that went something like "If you really want to expose someone's character, give him power."
If you're dealing with a moderator who is an SOB, you have to wonder if it’s really worth your time or the associated aggravation. I don't remember exactly what happened with me on TOB but I got turned orange for some reason, got annoyed and simply stopped visiting the site. I had been visiting it almost daily for over 5 years, but after a week or so I realized I really didn’t care very much and even felt juvenile when I'd read some of the threads, like a junior high kid sneaking a cigarette behind the garage.
Why not just drop that board? Life’s too short………………………………………Luca

Life’s too short………………………………………Luca We don’t drop it because, as bitchy and self-important as those moderators/owners get, it is nevertheless a modest form of entertainment to poke the pig ... we know, with surety (in most cases) he or she will invent a rule we transgress, usually after we have reportedly transgressed it, but it’s ,Ike watching a train wreck: We know we shouldn’t, but sometimes we just can’t help ourselves. of course, I can only speak for myself. If RSM is speaking of the one of whom I think he is speaking, I knew him for the dictator he is before he came to that community of which I also believe he is speaking. So, the day in “our” community I recognized the little prince, I knew why he had been asked to join, I knew at some point, he would be elevated to moderator, and I knew my days there were numbered. He ran his own community into the ground, so from a “leopard-doesn’t-change-his-spots” perspective, I was pretty sure what would become of that community as well. the only thing left to those of us of the more perceptive persuasion was, entertainment.

But to your point, yeah, if you don't like Rome, go to Venice!

...Why not just drop that board? Life’s too short………………………………………Luca You are 100% right. It is the rational thing to do and it probably irritates the henchman because it removes the power from him, i.e., he can't ban someone who voluntarily walks away.

...If RSM is speaking of the one of whom I think he is speaking, I knew him for the dictator he is before he came to that community... Different site, it is actually a bass fishing forum. No matter the topic or reason for forums, many times the same drama plays out I did think it would be funny to recruit everyone from here to all sign up there and have every ones first post be "Free RSM789". Of course I could always do the same myself by creating a bunch of fake user names using proxy IP addresses, but that would cut into my fishing time . Luca is right, life is too short.

No matter the topic or reason for forums, many times the same drama plays out What could liberals and conservatives possibly argue about on a bass fishing site? What kind of bait to use? It isn't a liberal/conservative thing at all, in fact politics are never discussed. Topics ranging from conservation practices to goings on in the industry can come up where people give their opinion. The site owner likes to consider himself an expert in the industry, so whenever someone disagrees with him, he & his henchman turn on the offending party. As much as I dislike smug people, I often make myself a target. And while I realize bass fishing is more popular in the south and not as much here in the drought-ridden west, you are showing your ignorance with your comment. Bait? Really? You sound like the mom at the high school football game who thinks the Monarchs helmets are pretty...
