Sorry Dave... You're the Pinto guy. Just below the guy who drove a Vega. But at least you were slotted higher than the guy who rode a 10 speed to school. Hold my beer ... I had a 73 Pinto my Jr year and got hit by a drunk driver and did not explode, then replaced it with a 73 Vega my Senior year in 75. I graduated I upgraded to a Maverick .... Vega's were cool because you could fit a Chevy 350 V8 into them. Just make sure you change the drive train otherwise you go from 0-60 in nothing flat, but stay there because that is the top speed. Pinto's were, well, Pinto's.

That's one badass car...a total chick magnet. Everyone remembers the dudes who drove cool cars in HS. So of course, I dated the same girl in Jr. & Sr. year - no chance to see what the car could do for me. Then again, that girl was 2 years older than me, already out of high school and way out of my league looks wise, so maybe the car did its job. After all, this past Friday was the 41st Valentines Day we have shared together Well there you have it. Congrats BTW.

I attended my first national medical ultrasound convention in San Francisco in 1976, and the only rental car I could get at the last minute was a lavender Gremlin. Try driving that POS near the Castro district or the Tenderloin for three days.

Geez... I forgot about that one. I'll bet you looked pretty spiffy tooling the streets of SF in that.

I don’t want to leave you with the impression the ‘76 Pinto was all I drove: Before I want into the Navy, a ‘68 Mustang. After the Pinto, I had a ‘74 Firebird... THEN, of course, I got a truck because I was aging out of my cool car stage. Sorry Dave... You're the Pinto guy. Just below the guy who drove a Vega. But at least you were slotted higher than the guy who rode a 10 speed to school. Only because you guys never saw it... still a Pinto, but it was custom from the tires up. Although, you guys want me as the Pinto guy, I’ve got broad shoulders!

So where does a Gremlin fit in this hierarchy? I had one of those once too.

Gremlins were the poor mans Pinto. They were such a cheap knock-off, they couldn't even get them to explode on impact. Then AMC went and introduced the Pacer, which made the Gremlin look cool.
Even AMC's nice cars were knockoffs. The Javelin was an imitation of Ford's Boss Mustang, The Rebel Machine copied the looks of the Dodge Charger while the Hurst SC/Rambler was basically a Chevy box Nova.
People who bought AMC's were usually people who were forced to play with Matchbox cars instead of Hot Wheels as a kid.
