I saw a NatGeo documentary on the origins of the MS-13 gang, and was surprised that we may very well have been at the root of it all going back 40 years to Reagan, and then exacerbated by Clinton.
It seems our involvement in support of the right wing government in El Salvador in the 80's during their civil war resulted in a large number of immigrants coming to the US as legitimate asylum seeking refugees. Being outcasts here, some of them formed a group to basically protect each other - the Mara Salvatrucha gang. Then, as their numbers grew from more Salvadorian refugees, they got more involved with the illegal aspects of gangs.
Fast forward to 1999, Clinton signs a law which essentially made it easier to deport refugees who were caught up in gang violence. Apparently, some 20,000 gang members (not necessarily illegal aliens) were deported to El Salvador. These deportees had no real ties to the country, so we basically dropped a gang bomb on El Salvador, and they've pretty much overrun that country...and now more refugees headed our way some 20 years later.
Tying this into the gun violence problem we have here in the US, and hispanic / black gangs are far and away the biggest source of this, our solution needs to focus on eradicating gangs on the streets...period. Without that concerted effort, law-abiding citizens will continue to arm themselves to protect from these growing gangs - especially when you have politicians in certain cities pretty much throwing law enforcement under the bus, or worse.
