I was at a small BBQ party about three weeks ago where someone raised an interesting question that generated some lively debate, even though the people at the party were primarily conservatives. So with only two weeks before the election, I thought I'd pose it here to see what the breadth of this site's political opinions are. The question was:
If you could appoint any person in America to be president of the United States, who would be your top three choices? The only (constitutional) restrictions are that they must be alive, must be native born, and must be at least 35 years old.
1. 2. 3.

The question was who you would want appointed as president, not divine right monarch. You'd want somebody with an appreciation for commonsense conservative principles, can compromise and isn't convinced that he or she has visionary insight into the brave new world.
You'd also want somebody who would be able to lead and develop consensus. If the question was for divine right monarch clearly the best choice would be me, but nobody asked..............................Luca

Luca, age must bring wisdom, because at the party I also proposed Mitt Romney, and was roundly chastised for it. My top two were Trey Gowdy and Romney, with maybe Rand Paul third. But it's interesting that nobody else has yet proposed him. It seems that maybe the current atmosphere of confrontation and belligerence, rather than compromise and conciliation, has crossed the aisle and become mainstream.

Rand Paul was my #1..."?" {SEE ABOVE}. IMHO the most knowledgeable on both governing operations and a compromise of ideas that embrace parts of both sides.

Mitt Romney Trey Gowdy Scott Walker With all due respect, Mitt Romney has proven over the years to be less than useless as a conservative, and Trey Gowdy is nothing but talk. Scott Walker--like Chris Christie--looked for a couple of years to be a contender for POTUS but ultimately didn't have the charisma or stomach for the job. I'm just interested--what about Romney is appealing?

1. Ron Paul, with his son Rand as VP;
2. Kennedy (Lisa, not any of the Massachusetts family), with Dennis Miller as VP;
3. Donald Trump.

He's the most psycho alarmist I can think of, and who's never met a conspiracy theory he didn't embrace. He would launch a nuclear strike if someone farted in the middle of the night. If you want a radio/TV guy, both Michael Savage and Ben Shapiro would be much better. In fact, I'd buy tickets to a debate between Ben Shapiro, Candace Owens and Thomas Sowell on one side, and any three Democrats on the planet on the other.

I'm just interested--what about Romney is appealing? Romney has the qualities desirable for a successful president in today's environment. He's ethical and has self-control . He sets an example for professional behavior. He's extremely bright and communicates well . He has wide experience and was very successful in the business world, meaning he understands what is possible and what is not. He has political experience as both a Senator and a governor. He knows when to compromise and what is required to lead .............................................Luca
