It was a Mickey Mouse tournament with a relatively weak field. 25-yard fields, no playoffs, tournament champion determined by a point system in pool play -- 10 points for a win and 1 point for every point you scored on offense. Defense was absolutely irrelevant.

Top storylines to watch at Edison’s Battle at the Beach passing tournament <~~~ Link
Top storylines to watch at the Battle at the Beach passing tournament at Edison on Saturday:
1. Who will shine in Santa Margarita’s quarterback competition?
Seniors John Gazzaniga and James Johnson, along with sophomore left-hander Hayes Cloutier, are competing for the Eagles’ starting QB job, coach Anthony Rouzier said. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Gazzaniga took the starting reins last season after transferring from Orange Lutheran. Johnson was slowed in 2023 by an early-season injury. Cloutier is a dual threat quarterback with excellent speed.
Santa Margarita opens against Capistrano Valley in Pool B at 9 a.m.
2. How will new JSerra starting quarterback Ryan Hopkins look?
Lions coach Victor Santa Cruz said that the 6-foot-3, 185-pound junior is “QB 1.” JSerra’s quarterback position has been a hot topic in recent months after the transfer of starter Michael “Butter” Tollefson to Tustin.
3. Who will emerge from St. John Bosco’s group of quarterbacks?
The Braves plan to play three or four quarterbacks as they progress on filling the shoes of starter Caleb Sanchez, now at Columbia. The group, St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro said, includes junior Matai Fuiava, touted freshman Kóa Malau’ulu, senior Jack Nyman and sophomore Graham Lunzer.
Fuiava played the most of the three returning QBs last season.
St. John Bosco opens against Los Alamitos in Group D at 9 a.m. The Griffins don’t expect to be full strength.
4. How will new Corona del Mar starting QB Max Nashed fare?
The 6-foot, 165-pound senior has emerged as the replacement for Kaleb Annett (Boise State signee), Corona del Mar coach Kevin Hettig said. But look for Annett’s brother Brady, a junior, to get time as well Saturday.
The Sea Kings open against Narbonne and recent Oklahoma committed junior QB Jaden O’Neal at 9:45 a.m. in Group D. O’Neal played last season for Newport Harbor.
5. Will Edison wide receiver Jacob Martin put on a show?
The Chargers produced one of the breakout performers last year at the Battle at the Beach in wide out Mason York (Weber State). On Saturday, it could be wide out Jacob Martin, a 6-foot-2 senior who is having a strong offseason.
Martin has offers from Idaho State and Colorado State.
Edison opens against Centennial Corona and Texas A & M committed QB Husan Longstreet at 9 a.m. in Pool A.
6. What will Mission Viejo’s offense look like at full strength?
The Diablos defeated Mater Dei to win their South County tournament about two weeks ago without standout wide receivers Phillip Bell III and Vance Spafford. Both players, Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson said, are expected to return on Saturday as Mission Viejo faces against Millikan, Charter Oak, JSerra (10:30 a.m.) and Chaparral in Pool C.
Mater Dei, the defending Battle at the Beach champion, is on its dead period and not playing the tournament this year.

How did Millikan do with all those Los Al xfers? Surprisingly (?) they were the first to go home, throwing a 0-fer! That was a powerhouse group that included Charter Oak and Chapparal with MV and JS.
