Servite WON? Since they started the game at 9:00 PM, local time, I could only watch until the half. Other than the opening of the first quarter, they couldn't get anything done against Bosco... color me surprised at such a resounding win.

Servite WON? Since they started the game at 9:00 PM, local time, I could only watch until the half. Other than the opening of the first quarter, they couldn't get anything done against Bosco... color me surprised at such a resounding win. Yeah, three weeks ago Bosco employed a defensive scheme to double-team Tetairoa McMillan and essentially render him a non-factor. And our coaches didn't make adequate adjustments, and so the offense was just stuck in the mud after the 1st quarter. The defense, thankfully, kept us in the game until almost the end. In the rematch our game plan was simply to run the ball while maintaining the spread formation. Our opening TD drive of 80 yards did not contain a single pass attempt and, except for a drive near the end of the 2nd quarter, Noah Fifita hardly threw the ball at all--and only twice in the 2nd half. He finished 6/10, for 47 yards (mind you, this is a kid that averages 259 passing yards per game). But he ran for 128 yards and three TDs, and Houston Thomas went for 134 yards, including a 71-yard TD run to re-take the lead at 27-21 near the end of the 3rd quarter. St. John Bosco had a muffed punt in the 1st quarter that led to a TD, and an interception and a fumble in the 4th quarter that resulted in the final two TDs. The defense did as good a job as they could otherwise, holding the Braves to 21 points one week after they gashed Los Alamitos for 600 yards and 63 points.

Servite rope-a-doped Bosco in that basically meaningless league game.
You really think Servite only good for 10 points v Bosco when Los Al dropped 38 on then?

Not one kid over 5'10" here. (Maybe that was by design; Graham and McMillan must be camera-shy...)
Let's see Raleek Brown, C.J. Williams, and Bj Tolo play offense and defense the entire game.

No, it was inexplicable at the time--especially after putting up 37 the week before on an even better Mater Dei defense. That being said, it sounds like the Los Al game was basically a track meet, where Bosco knew it didn't need an all-out effort on defense to win the contest. And you guys can put up points as well as anyone. I do think there was an emotional let-down with the Friars after the intensity of the MD game just six days before. Even some of the players conceded last week there just wasn't any juice in the team the week of the October 29 Bosco game. But to not make some simple adjustments in what was clearly a winnable game (14-10 at the half, 17-10 after the 3rd), I put that on the coaches. Santa Margarita must have studied that tape because they employed a similar scheme and kept us down most of the game as well. It was only 13-3 in the 4th quarter when TMac's 80-yard pick six put the game out of reach. The 34-3 final score was not indicative of how unnervingly close that game was for three quarters. So going in to last Friday's semifinal, I was not feeling confident (unlike the first game) and really didn't know what to expect. But I have to hand it to the coaches and the players, they bought into a highly unorthodox offensive game plan....and executed it perfectly. Can't express how happy I am for this senior group of kids who came in with Coach Thomas (the Sequel) and rebuilt the pride in the program from the dumpster fire of 2018. They truly earned this win and this historic shot at a title.

I don't think Servite really "rope-a-doped" now Bick, easy to claim, lesser to prove. I'll hang my hat on the short week after a HUGE game against the #1 team in the country. I was wondering how much in the tank Servite would have mentally, emotionally and physically after that match-up. I know some wanted to throw the logic out there, Servite the underdog and likely to see Bosco again wasn't gonna play for real and wait for a better day ahead.
Credo, love the post regarding not a guy over 5'10". I was amazed at the last CIF game I got to attend between MD and Servite as the MD guys looked to have 40-50 lbs at many a position. Even more so th guys playing both sides of ball most of the game at this level, I relate as it has been something CDM has been faced with most of its existing football program, in the big games, never the biggest, never the fastest and your best players almost always play both sides of the ball to even have a chance at winning something meaningful. Heck, this year again, our two best D1 Seniors aren't getting scholarships in football but..... BASEBALL! Servite this past two years has certainly played above its stature when pitted against the likes of SJB and MD. If there was ever a year.....

I hope we see the best of play from both the Friars and the Monarchs tonight. No matter what the outcome, it is a truly a historic night. The first photo is from my house. (We'll be walking to the game.) The second was taken about an hour ago. Attachments:

I hope we see the best of play from both the Friars and the Monarchs tonight. * No matter what the outcome, it is a truly a historic night. ** *This applies to one side and one side only. ** Yes in the sense it was a first, outside of that it was forgettable. Congrats to the victors, left no doubt whom rules the HSF gridiron.

Looks like victors are opening at a 45 point favorite...... Suppose they won't be calling the CIF STATE CHAMPIONSHIP game "Clash of the Titans"!

The 5th place team from Trinity League should not be "rewarded" by winning a D-2 Championship. That's not fair to the true D-2 level teams.

There were really only 4 D1 teams this year, and they all happened to be the top 4 teams in the nation.
As for this "state championship", the #8 team in D1 would be favored to beat them.
How is it that higher rated DLS isn't in the Open Bowl?

How is it that higher rated DLS isn't in the Open Bowl? One reason is because Serra beat the team that beat De La Salle (i.e. St. Francis). Another reason is that the Southern Section is the only section that exclusively uses Calpreps computer ratings to fill their brackets.
