This issue drives me nuts, for I believe those who recommend abolishing it are well aware of the consequences of such an action, yet are intentionally misleading politically agnostic folks.
I know the rational, logical explanation for the need of the Electoral College, but have found that when explaining it to those who don't have a real interest in politics, their eyes glaze over. For those people, I simply tell them to remember that we are electing a President of the UNITED STATES, not a president of the AMERICAN PEOPLE. In other words, the States are voting, not individual Americans. I believe that simple contrast sticks in peoples minds and allows them to counter the anti-Electoral college argument without getting into the weeds.

It may be the single most point that I believe people, even my friends are ignorant in regards to their own country and how it works. How many times do I get challenged with the comment "We are a Democracy" in which I reply "No, we are a Republic"... 9 out of 10 have no idea at that point what I just said. Something I learned in middle school and was so easy to understand.  |

This utterly frightening to me and likely most of you. When those whom believe the popular vote would be in their best interest overshadows those whom believe the EC keeps us all equally represented under this Republic rule and law.
