Mater Dei football players allegedly sexually assaulted teammate, police record says
In a locker room at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, several football players forced a teammate to the floor and exposed their genitals. Then they held him down, as one player “began humping” him from behind, through his pants. The incident happened in late August, according to a Santa Ana Police Department document, two weeks after the student started school at Mater Dei, home to one of the country’s most celebrated high school football programs. He wasn’t physically hurt, but the episode left him suffering from anxiety, police said in the document. He left Mater Dei shortly afterward. The document, which The Times obtained through a public records request, is a single-page, eight-sentence description of the alleged assault that the Police Department entered into its computer system Sept. 16. The document does not address whether the Aug. 31 claim of sexual assault was investigated, or whether students, school officials or family members contacted police. The document said the incident was reported to the student’s coach, who informed “school officials,” but did not specify when. The police received secondhand information about the incident from social services, the document said. The allegation of sexual assault, which has not been previously reported, raises questions about Mater Dei’s stated commitment to student safety and transparency in its storied athletics program. It also highlights concerns about the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange’s standards of behavior and sportsmanship for its athletes, many of whom are closely watched by college scouts. www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-05-09/mater-dei-football-alleged-sexual-assault-police-record

The thing that gets me about all this (other than the fact that it is rude, crude, and vulgar), is that it serves as considerable evidence that the football staff has little or no control over what is happening just outside their office doors. Wasn't that one of AD Amanda Waters' main concerns? Isn't that one of the plaintiff's complaints also?

The purpose of the message board is to share observations. So if my observations conflict with others, its not anything personal. Having said that, Bick, your last comment is an example of apologism.
Of course there is misbehavior elsewhere in the world. But one can decide for himself whether all these stories emanating from one school are the result of a failure of oversight/leadership or an inexplicable, malicious crusade by a gang of reporters with ill intent.
I think I accurately described above how we arrived at the current situation. It's not that there are a bunch of bad people at that particular school. It's simply a failure of oversight and a lost sense of mission. When a head coach charged with oversight of a large number of teenage "jocks" - not a pejorative, as most HSFB players fit the meaning - states repeatedly that he doesn't "have the time" to discipline their behavior even on campus, there is a serious lack of responsibility and recognition of purpose.
Yeah, I'm old school. But the purpose of parochial schools remains to educate and instill Christian ethics with all that that entails. The purpose of parochial HSFB remains to give high school kids a final chance to compete fairly and have fun while learning the values that HSFB inculcates........................Luca

I understand it might seem as though I've become a 3 stripe apologist, but my comments should really be construed as anti media driven witch hunt.
This goes back to one of our kids losing his scholarship due to a bunch of zealots making it their mission to doxx him because he lifted another student to his feet at an assembly for taking a knee during the national anthem.
Couple that with this insidious narrative based "reporting", cancelling, etc we've been subjected to for the past 3 years during COVID, I'm pretty pissed off whenever I see one sided reporting aimed at damaging another.

I'm pretty pissed off whenever I see one sided reporting aimed at damaging another. Agreed. Why hasn't Scott Reid, Sondheimer, Plaschke made any mention of Mater Dei just defeating the hazing allegations against them in a court of law? Isn't this newsworthy and relevant to what they have been writing about since November?

Doesn't fit the narrative, hence the latest "bombshell" from last September.
Luca - was thinking some more about the "don't have time" comment. Yeah, it comes off as very arrogant, and misses the mark about team oversight. Not sure if that's a function of snapping at the notion of being challenged by someone he apparently didn't respect, or if he really feels like it isn't his responsibility. Doesn't that lend itself to at least a minimal discussion of what the conditions are like at other schools to have a better understanding of the happenings at MD v. elsewhere? With no context, MD might actually be BETTER than anywhere else.

The purpose of parochial HSFB remains to give high school kids a final chance to compete fairly and have fun while learning the values that HSFB inculcates........................Luca Luca, you've posted variations of that statement several times over the years. I've responded twice with some research that suggested that the real original purpose of high school football, which began in the late 19th century, was to allow high school students the chance to play the same sport that was becoming so popular in colleges across the country. That's it. All the higher purposes and ethereal values came later, and are often personal hopes, wishes and preferences that vary from parent to parent. I've spoken to too many single or lower-income parents over the last 21 years, who sincerely believe the purpose of high school football is to provide their child with the best opportunity at a college education and a successful life, to discount their beliefs as of lesser value.

Where, when and why did that happen? Los Al about 4 years ago. After seeing the video of him lifting a student to his feet at an assembly that had gone viral, a certain group reached out to Los Al demanding his expulsion, posted his home address and phone number online, and then contacted the 2 schools that offered him and successfully pressured them to rescind their offers.

OK, you guys have finally convinced me. Even though I've been part of the program for 21 years, and I know both pugilists, Coach Rollinson, Geri Campeau, the trainer Kevin Anderson, Father Jenkins, Amanda Waters and others involved, I now understand that you guys know more about what happened in this case because you read Scott Reid, Bill Plaschke and Eric Sondheimer. How silly of me. I won't try to bring some balance to this thing, and I won't comment on it again. I guess I'm just too uninformed. Feeling second guessed? People don't think you know what you're talking about even though you have the knowledge, tenure and credibility? Welcome to the world of officiating.

For those of you who might still be interested in this case, in the past few days:
1. The plaintiffs have been dinged for hiding documents pertaining to the case, particularly text messages between the player and his parents immediately before and after the fight. The plaintiffs may be fined a few thousand dollars as a sanction for doing so.
2. The plaintiffs contended that MD breached their duty of care in monitoring the lockerroom. Evidence has shown the lockerroom had private security and a rotating group of assistant AD's monitoring it almost constantly.
3. The plaintiffs contended that MD medical care breached their duty of care. Campus video recordings have shown that he jogged to the trainer's tent within 30 seconds of the fight and received medical care immediately. It's also been revealed that he saw a physician only twice after the fight, and started playing football at another high school a month after the incident. The plaintiffs have changed their allegations to saying that he didn't receive care "for far too long" after the incident.
4. The plaintiffs alleged that the player had to participate in "bodies" in order to get moved up to varsity. Evidence proves he had a varsity locker and practiced on the varsity for weeks before the fight.
It's not too surprising that the case seems to be falling apart as more concrete evidence comes to light. It's even more interesting that none of this has been reported by Scott Reid, Bill Plaschke, Mark Whicker, Steve Fryer or Eric Sondheimer. How is it possible that they all lost interest in this case at the same time?
