I think ChatGPT could make a Wikipedia better than the biased editors at Wikipedia. Go for it. Do it.

I really doubt that an AI program that collects a bunch of facts and puts together some prose tying it all together is going to outcompete a site like Wikipedia. I don’t think an AI program is going to be able to to understand or clarify nuance, far less offer original insight. Certainly it can fool you into thinking that it’s written by a human but I don’t think it will match the quality of a well reasoned and discerning writer. Reciting facts - accurate or not - doesn’t necessarily lead to an original conclusion, let alone educate anyone. I offer as an example the individual going by the name of Wabash on the old Orange County board, who could - and did - combine both real and imaginary “facts” all day long without ever attaining the level of mere coherence……………Luca

Now that's funny. I feel for that Wabash dude... The Rodney Dangerfield of chat rooms.

So now it doesn't make much sense for Wikipedia to continue soliciting annual donations from it's readers since it's basically has become......an autonomous machine.

We tested ChatGPT with legal citation yesterday.
Utter failure, completely made up case law and when we fact checked it, it apologized for "making a mistake"
Good to know my job is safe... for now

Now that's funny. I feel for that Wabash dude... The Rodney Dangerfield of chat rooms. He is a peculiar dude. He has been debunked more times than perhaps any person in human history, yet he not only sticks by his empty plastic guns, he is so convinced of his intellectual and moral superiority that he is disdainful and dismissive of anyone and everyone who thinks differently. I'm honestly mystified by two things. One is how anyone can reach late adulthood and still believes as he does. And two, how he has reached that age without being seriously injured or killed after years of crossing the street by himself.

I noticed a huge difference between ChatGPT 3.5 and version 4. 3.5 made a quite a few mistakes and was useless. I pay for 4, and haven't detected many errors, and much of the time the errors were due to an imprecise prompt. Also, version 4 is able to provide sources. That is important.
Humans make huge errors too. Consider what happened the past two years. Self driving cars are a long way off, but they will be here some day. If we judge AI by today's reality, we will be left behind. One of my son's has studied AI at one of our local universities. We both agree, it is a lot quicker to get your answer from version 4 than a search.
Several months ago after reading an entry from Wikipedia, I hoped for something better and thought AI would eventually provide that. The biased (extreme right wing blah blah blah) Wikipedia needs an alternative.
No one will lose their job to AI. People will lose their jobs to other people who use AI. I see that happening. But like Reagan said: Trust but verify.

Indeed no one will loose their jobs to AI. But they just might......loose their life.

I am more afraid of someone texting while driving.

The founding fathers of AI have already seen the handwriting on the wall and are now just merely proposing a moratorium on it. But alas the line has already been crossed and the prospects for humanity are quite bleak indeed.

The future never did need us. Time will continue whether we exist or not. We are a temporary zit on the ass of the universe, and when we finally pop nothing will change.
