I started playing paintball at age 52, 10 years ago today. My daughter suckered me into playing at a softball fundraiser. 10 years later I've spent more on paintball gear, travel and doctors bills than any old guy would like to admit. Just wondering if anyone else here has dabbled in the shooting of friends and strangers in the face.

I think about doing it frequently, but not with paintballs.

I have played occasionally (once a year or so) for the past 30 years. Initially we had to go to Temecula to find a course, have gone to Sat Con Village behind Prado Dam for a couple of decades.
I really enjoyed taking my sons for their first time when they were 13 or so. Years of video game playing gave them confidence both in firing the weapons and strategy to win the game. One of my son still plays a couple times a year, he is like you, spent a fortune on gear.
In the early years, everyone had single shot pistols, so athleticism played a big part. You could rush the flag and then run in an evasive pattern and have a chance to not get shot. You had to be a sniper with any longer shots, you would only get one off before getting shot back at. With the automatic weapons now, not a chance. Just light up an area and don't worry too much about being accurate.

I carry 9 X 20 rounds mags and 4 X 6 round mags for my pistol. After that, it's hide the rest of the match. SC Village (Used to be Sat Con but PC culture made them change the name) is my home field. have you some look up Gizmo out there, I'm kind of a big deal now (in my own mind)

You are correct about it being called SC Village, that is what my sons know it as. The name Sat Con was used when i first went there & has always stuck in my head.
Here is an early SC village story. There is (was?) a tower in one of the fields, about 20 feet high, that they used to let people go to the top in (it had a staircase). You were out in the open, but it was a great vantage point to call out to your team and if you put two people there, they could protect each others back. Anyway, me & a buddy are up there at the start of a game and it is slow initially. We don't see any movement from any players on the other team, but what we do see is a bull from the neighboring farm pushing & poking on a knocked down portion of the fence that separates SC from said farm. Without any warning, my buddy fires a shot that hits the bull right on the butt, startling it and making it jump forward. In doing so, it knocks down what is left of that portion of the fence & is now on the paintball field. I'm busting up laughing as the bull meanders towards the brush in the middle of the field. About 30 seconds later, we hear the whistles from the officials and a bunch of folks yelling. All of the other players had to evacuate the field while the officials tried to figure out how to get the bull back home. We were safe in the tower, so we just stayed there for about an hour until someone from the farm showed up and took the bull home.

That's is funny. The cow fields are mostly gone now with all the development around. Tower is still there but insurance made the stairs disappear.
