If you pick the wrong team, by let's say 16 and they win by 7, is your score minus 16, or is it minus 23?

I think you mean the team you picked loses by 7. You get 0 points for not picking the winner, and you get -23 for being that far off the actual winning score. Total is -23.
As another example, you pick Upland by 14, but Los Alamitos wins by 7, you get 0 and -21 = -21.

Yep - that's what I meant. Wow...that IS harsh. So Prof and I would be +26, and you'd be -23, and SK80 -13 after game 1. Some big swings brewing in this system.
