Layne must've been one of the last guys to play without a face mask. I think Chuck Bednarik, who retired in 1960, was the last full-time two-way player in the NFL.

Correct about Bednarik. Not so sure about Bobby Layne.
I've often wondered why there are not more at least temporary two way players like Bednarik. You knew down near the goal line that the Patriots were going to go Gronkowski. Why not take a really mobile guard like Quinton Nelson and put him one-on-one with the guy? He could legally hold him up on the LOS scrimmage - he does it with pass rushers - and if it turned out that Gronkowski was only blocking, Nelson could bring down a RB running straight at him if needed. In either case, you've eliminated one of the Patriots' biggest red zone weapons.............Luca

There is a connection between Ryan and MD Dad.

With all due respect to Jim Fregosi, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, I think Nolan Ryan will always be my favorite Angel. Among his memorable quotes is this one: When asked why he thought so many modern pitchers had arm problems, he said it was because they don't throw enough. The guy threw more pitches in a game than most pitchers throw in a two, he started every four days, and he never had a sore arm in his life.

I think Ty Cobb would be right up there, or Jackie Robinson.
At the end of the day... This guy would get my vote.

I want to be like Bo... I can't throw as far as I used to. I had friends that could throw rockets back in the day.

I was about to hijack the RIP thread so I thought this would be a better spot to chat about old time NBA players that were associated with a particular team.
From some of the Luca / MDD banter, it seems you guys were around with the Pittsburgh Ironmen and the Chicago Stags. Feel free to name your associated guys on those teams.
Here's some of mine and I'm sure I'm missing a bunch, including teams.
Atlanta - Dominique Wilkins Boston - Bird, Russell, McHale Cincy - The Big O Cleveland - Dallas - Detroit - Laimbeer, Worm, Thomas SF / Golden State - Rick Barry Houston - Hakeem Philly - Wilt, Dr J, Barkley, Dawkins Portland - Walton New Orleans / Utah - Maravich, Malone Seattle - Shrempf Lakers - West, Baylor, Kobe, RAMBIS!

Portland - Walton New Orleans / Utah - Maravich, Malone Seattle - Shrempf Lakers - West, Baylor, Kobe, RAMBIS! Add Clyde the Glide Drexler to Portland's roster, and, John Stockton (one of my all-time favorites) to the Utah Jazz.
