First and second priority is to yourself. Isn't that what we're all about from a conservative standpoint...self-reliance?

I'm a compassionate conservative. Self reliance for me, but empathy for those I impact.

Self-reliance: yes; selfishness: no I'm not sure I would call the transfer trend--particularly when it involves upperclassmen--a reflection of self-reliance, as much as it is pure opportunism. High School kids and their families have taken on a professional attitude of late. I have also argued consistently that the benefit to the athlete (at least on the H.S. level) in transferring is often marginal; most of the benefit is to the school which boosts its own depth and high-profile status. IMHO, the conservative values loyalty, stability, and order. That does not preclude movement--be it school, job, profession, or location--but it doesn't do so for the quick fix and bright lights of "the grass isn't greener..."

If you get down to the bottom line on these transfers - upperclassmen or not - they're doing what they think they can to better their situation to enhance their future. No amount of loyalty to team, school, classmates, coaches outweighs that - primarily because NONE of them are willing to be accountable for what happens to YOU. It sounds entirely selfish and cynical, but the fact remains those parents and players making the choice are the ones who are accountable when the music stops.

You are correct. I just think these families have been sold a bill of goods by a whole cottage industry of coaches, trainers, and promoters that will continue to benefit whether those kids are successful or not down the road.

Mission Viejo used to (& may still) get transfers by having the only farm program withing 30 miles. Bob Johnson would use that loophole to pull players in from outside his district.
My son's freshman team at Tesoro in 2003 featured a kid that was heads & tails above everyone else (I'll leave out his name to not sound catty). He was the stud half back and stud middle linebacker. During the summer between Freshman & Sophomore year, this kids dad approach Varsity coach O'Connell, demanding that his son start on varsity. This boy may well had the talent to do that, but O'Connell was not going to run his program that way. He said that the kid could get moved up to varsity, but there were no guarantees that he would start.
So the dad goes to Bob Johnson, who makes the promise that the kid will start on Varsity for 3 straight years. The kid transfers, and does start - but as fullback, not halfback. Although he started all 3 years, he rarely touched the ball and never had the high school career he would have had at Tesoro. At Tesoro, he would have been BMOC, picking up D9 Championship rings in 2004 & 2005. Instead, he was just another transfer at MV, always overlooked as far as a ballcarrier. He did get a CIF title ring his first year when Sanchez was QB, but he had very little to do with the teams success.
Bob Johnson would make promises to kids & their parents not only to make his team better, but to also make other teams worse by losing star players.

The All Orange County Girls Swimming Team was announced yesterday. Here are the first team awards:
50 Freestyle - Santa Margarita 100 Freestyle - Santa Margarita 200 Freestyle - Santa Margarita 500 Freestyle - Santa Margarita 100 Backstroke - Santa Margarita 100 Breaststroke - Santa Margarita 100 Butterfly - Santa Margarita 200 Individual Medley - Santa Margarita 200 Medley Relay - Santa Margarita 200 Freestyle Relay - Santa Margarita 400 Freestyle Relay - Santa Margarita
The Eagles set two national records, four state records and five county records.
Hmm, I wonder how all those great swimmers all ended up going to one high school. Did Santa Margarita send out their recruiters in the middle of the night to poach all these girls who never really thought about swimming for the school, or is it possible all those very talented swimmers just wanted to swim for the most elite program in the area?

That's pretty wild.
Any public schools consistently dominate a sport?

Arcadia and Walnut are pretty good at badminton.

I said a sport. Fly swatting isn't much of a sport.

Foothill in lacrosse? Newport Harbor in water polo? Mira Costa in volleyball?

Foothill in lacrosse? Newport Harbor in water polo? Mira Costa in volleyball? Not sure what your definition of "Dominate" is, but there are a handful of schools in each of those sports you list that are of equal talent, ability and accomplishment.

I agree, SK80. None of those programs ever filled every spot on any All-County team. It is unprecedented.
