Any thoughts on this? I was disappointed in Joshua’s performance in the first bout. He’s not as good as I thought. He’s about a 3-2 favorite to win the rematch but I’m not so sure. I couldn’t believe he went down from what looked like an average left hook from Ruiz.
the heavyweight division is getting interesting again with Wilder (overrated), Tyson Fury, Ruiz and Joshua. They’re no match for the Ali-Frazier-Foreman-Norton-Quarry cohort of the 70’s, but the division has real competition with radically different stylists.
I’m going with Ruiz again, the most ridiculous looking heavyweight since Butterbean......................Luca

Just watched the hi-lights of the weigh in.., Ruiz looks so out of shape and neither in the analogues of heaven weight fighting would stand a chance against the greats.

I think he’s 20lbs heavier than he was for the first fight, and he was obese even then. But he doesn’t move a lot so I don’t know if that’s a major issue. Pretty fast hands but he doesn’t hit really hard.
They’d both be toast versus Ali or Frazier or Foreman (would never go the distance) but would match up reasonably well re Foreman or Quarry................Luca

I used to absolutely LOVE boxing back in the day. Funny thing is, I never remember Jimmy Lennon raising the hand of Irish Jerry Quarry at the end of a fight. He seemed more like the Washington Generals of heavyweight boxing.

I never remember Jimmy Lennon raising the hand of Irish Jerry Quarry at the end of a fight. Jerry Quarry was a very good heavyweight who might be a world champion today. He won 53 fights, so he got his hand raised a lot. He beat some of the heaviest hitters of his day, like Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Mac Foster and Buster Mathis, not to mention two-time champion Floyd Patterson. Six of his nine losses were to Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and Jimmy Ellis. His misfortune was coming along in an era when there were arguably more very good heavyweights than at any other time.

That's what's odd about it. I know he won a bunch of fights, but my only memory is him getting pummeled. The Ali fight was the worst.
I met him once as a teenager. He was a nice guy.

Quarry just wasn’t big enough for those guys. I don’t think he’d even be considered a heavy weight by today’s criteria. When you’d see a fight it’d because he’s fighting one of the other big heavy weights, and that’s why he seem to lose so often.
Two of the other big, bad heavyweights of the era were Ron Lyle and Ernie Shavers. Both of those fights with Quarry are on YouTube and are impressive. Shavers had one of the best punches ever and yet Quarry knocked him out in the first round. It’s true he was born in the wrong era

Jerry's younger brother Mike used to train at Cal State Fullerton while I was a student there. He won his first 35 fights until he fought for the light-heavyweight title and Bob Foster almost killed him. Tragically, both brothers died in their mid-50's from pugilistic dementia.

The more I think about it, I’ve changed my mind. I think Joshua will outbox and take A unanimous decision In 12 rounds..............Luca
