I was lucky enough to not only be at Kobe's first NBA Championship win at Staples against the Indiana Pacers in 2000 but ever more so lucky to run into him and get this hat (still with tag) signed......., I've already had a few people ask how much that must be worth.... priceless.

Please, please note that this is an observation, not a condemnation and something that could only be discussed by people who are not part of his family.
It is interesting the outpouring of sorry & respect for a man who just a few years back was vilified and accused of rape. Most of those who disliked him the most never considered the dropping of the charges to be an exoneration.
I can only think that his age, the suddenness of his death, the fact that his daughter was with him and that he leaves behind 3 young daughters has muted the negative, harsh feelings some had for him. While I personally liked Kobe and believed his version of events in Colorado, I have to wonder when those who aren't in the same boat as I will make their true feelings known.

Some WaPo reporter broached this subject, and got blasted with over 100k responses ranging from death threats to eff yous... within like an hour I think.
The people who dislike him for that incident likely feel some shock as well - especially considering his daughter was involved.
The OCC baseball coach and his daughter, as well as a former Edison girls basketball player were involved as well.
I think at this time, I'm going to be part of the masses that want to remember all that's good about Kobe.

Beyond the court, I had a slightly different perspective on Kobe, that stemmed from his Catholic faith. I knew the priest who married Kobe and his wife at St. Edward's in Dana Point and know that he was currently a parishioner at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach.
When he was arrested and charged with rape in 2003, he made a rare public confession and actually used the word "adultery" to describe his transgression. While this was certainly disappointing behavior I never believed the rape accusation. He certainly had his flaws (as do all of us) but by all accounts he seemed to be a very devoted father to his four daughters. A truly sad day, when a piece of L.A. died this morning.

This is what I was referring to RSM Well, on the bright site at least she's black. If she were white people would be calling her a racist a-hole. But as it is, she's just a generic a-hole. It's nice to be able to make that distinction..................................Luca

Well, on the bright site at least she's black. If she were white people would be calling her a racist a-hole. But as it is, she's just a generic a-hole. It's nice to be able to make that distinction..................................Luca She is a reporter, so I'm not so quick to label her an a-hole. She may just be consistent, albeit insensitive. If Harvey Weinstein got hit by a bus while going to the courtroom this week, his trial and the hatred towards him would be a major part of his obituary, even though he has not been found guilty. When Richard Nixon died, his involvement in Watergate was the byline of his obituary. When OJ croaks, the first sentence of the story will be about both the Nicole Brown killing and his NFL career. At a time where the pluses & minuses of ones life are posted immediately upon ones death, Kobe seems to have avoided one side of the equation. As I said, I think the factors surrounding his death has muted those who had harsh things to say about him. Had he died at age 94 in his sleep, there might have been more critics willing to say how they have always felt about him. As an aside, please keep the Chester Family, who live here in Orange County, in your prayers. Sarah, who was on the helicopter with her teen daughter Payton, left behind a husband and twin 16 year old boys. She was a wonderfully sweet woman, full of grace & gratitude and she & her husband have done an incredible job raising 3 responsible & very respectful children. It is every bit the tragedy that the Bryant family is going through without the publicity (which may be a good thing).

Not to mention Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, John Denver, Jim Croce, Otis Redding, Ricky Nelson and most of Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's eerie how plane crashes have claimed so many athletes and singers.
