I thought the comments below were an interesting reflection on the times. IMHO some of the ridiculous and disparate reactions to COVID-19 could not have occurred in the pre-Twitter/social media age.
Any other thoughts on the Tweet below--and the two accompanying replies? There's a little bit of grist for anyone's mill there.

I couldn't agree more. Twitter and other social media sites have dumbed down our population to an unfortunate degree. Today people actually claim the MSM is full of lies and then they go get their news from Twitter and other such sites as if that's somehow more accurate. No, it just tells them what they wish to be true so it seems accurate, and makes them feel better. That's why we have no basis for common dialog...because some of us don't believe everything we see on Twitter, and some of us repeat everything we see on Twitter as if it's true. Which one are you?

The dearth of common sense along with all these rapid communication vehicles, yes, allows for information to be passed quickly, but also for those vehicles, if so possessed (as most are) to stimulate and fan the spread of rumor and hysteria. does anyone believe the toilet paper, a nonsensical item in these times, would have disappeared from the shelves if those low-education women did not have access to cell phone cameras and Facebook or Twitter?

The antidote to "confusion and division" is information and truth. Unfortunately, we live in a time when all our traditional sources (i.e. the media and the education system) of those two things have been usurped by ideological bias and editorializing. When you couple that with social media continually polluting every kernel of truth with an overwhelming volume of bullshit, how can anything but confusion and division be the result?

Just forces us to vet the underlying numbers, think for ourselves, and come to our own conclusions.

Just forces us to vet the underlying numbers, think for ourselves, and come to our own conclusions. I agree, however (a) Most information and truth is not expressed in numbers, making them very difficult to vet without access to the actual newsmakers, and (b) Most Americans don't have the intellectual capacity to vet everything they are bombarded with 24/7.

I agree a lot of us don’t have the intellectual capacity, but even those who do face a lack of suitable resources they can trust. So, I figure, even the best efforts get frustrating and end without discernible conclusions.

Agreed, but it's OK to acknowledge you don't know, or qualify opinions without defending them as "facts". Arguing an opinion without leaving open the possibility of being wrong, or being unwilling to admit error, is what seems to be lost the most.

There you have it. If you can't get at the truth, and you're blasted every day with left-wing and right-wing nutjobs telling you their version of what's true, what remedy do most people have, other than to pick a side.

Try door #3... I don't know. That is actually more true than either side...in my opinion. Must be a really old-school value to keep your mouth shut, or qualify your thoughts as opinions, until or unless you know what you're talking about. I think that was called "integrity". Similarly, anyone who does nothing but criticize without being willing to take a position by which he can be held accountable for, is nothing more than a no account.

Are you under the impression that anyone here can be held "accountable" for their opinions? How does that work?
You all seem to say whatever comes to mind with little thought for how it might affect others...where's your accountability?

Isn’t it interesting Bick posts about and highlights the “I don’t know” option and Vile boy, who will never admit he doesn’t know, is the very next post. anyone know what he said? Don’t tell me he admitted he doesn’t know. 😄
