Spend a few minutes scrolling thru the comments from what appears to be actual people, and you'll see a LOT of real fear.
Between the media exaggerating the most minor of events (i.e. a couple days of rain becomes STORM WATCH), and the ability to customize your news feed to get a large dose of this stuff, you've got a large part of the population paralyzed by fear.
