Saw an interesting segment on The Hill about how eight years of President Obama’s condescension and animosity towards conservatives and Christians led to America voting for Trump.
They showed a clip from the View where Megan McCain made the egregious error of telling us Obama wasn’t a saint, that he was a flawed human being like the rest of us, and maybe we should be able to talk about it without everyone’s head exploding I rage (whereupon, liberals heads exploded in rage all over her twitter feed).
the Hill and McCain raise some interesting points, among which were the Obama Administration ushered in the Culture wars that led to the election of Trump, who exacerbated them... while I don’t Obama ushered them in (Bush Administration had its bits with the culture wars but people pretty resoundingly beat him down for those episodes), I do accept Obama was harsh and very critical towards conservatives and Christians, and launched arguably some of THE most liberal legislation we’ve seen in this country.
he even basically told the voters “I’m not on the ballot, but if you want my policies to continue, here’s Hillary...”
but did he effectively give Trump the election?

Trying to determine the one person who started the culture wars is a fool's errand, as certainly there is no one person (or handful of people) who started them. You'd have to go back to the hippie counterculture of the 1960's to find the early roots. With that said, one person who played as leading a role as anyone in removing civility from the wars and making them more nasty, it was arguably Rush Limbaugh.

I agree with Rush having been at the helm, of sorts, but as you say, “...no one person or handful of people...” Harry Reid certainly elevated the struggle to new levels of acrimony and Nancy Pelosi, pre-Botox, was his side kick... so can it be said Obama exacerbated the culture wars? Did Obama set the table for Trumps upset of Barrack’s hand-picked successor? |

I just had a long conversation with an ardent liberal. she constantly criticizes Trump for what he is presumed to have done in his past and doesn’t understand how I can support him. After several exchanges, she said she fears for this what he will do to this country as president... to which I asked her, well, he’s been president for nearly 4 years now: How has he damaged us so far?  so then, I acknowledged Obama might have done some positive things, but I didn’t trust him so didn’t give him credit when due. I asked her if she could name at least 5 things she credits Trump for doing that benefitted us. Took her awhile and, as she acknowledged, she had to google it, but she did come up with (just) five things. |
