I read a snarky tweet the other day that claimed the reason why the number of cases & deaths from Covid19 were less than originally forecast was because of the shutdowns and other restrictions placed upon our society. Those directives, they claim, are responsible for knocking the numbers down. The author ended his tweet "We used science to save lives and now the stupid want to ignore it so they can go out to dinner".
This was just one of probably thousands of similar statements by people on the left that declare the orders handed down by governors were based on "science", so therefore they should not be questioned. The problem with these statements is that they are ignorant of what science (and the scientific method) actually is. They throw around the word "science" like it was on their word of the day calendar and they have to include it in 5 sentences today in order to increase their vocabulary. A majority of the governors orders were based on opinions of people in each states Board of Health. There are no studies, there is no empirical & tested evidence, that scientifically prove wearing a mask, staying inside or keeping six feet away from people will reduce this viruses transmission. Zero. All there are are medical professionals, some credible, some not, whose opinion it is (or was) that these steps will cut down on transmission.
Now if one wants to believe one or some of these doctors, then that is fine. Obviously, their opinion carries some weight if they have the experience and credentials in this field. But what the left continually gets wrong is that these doctors opinions are not science. If you believe one of these doctors is correct, you aren't following science, you are following the faith you have in another individual.
Since this virus is new, none of these opinions can yet be proven or disproven. No one yet has used the scientific method to show what they purport to be true actually is. All anyone has right now, no matter what they believe, is faith and common sense, which are major components of daily life.
So the irony is that so many on the left who ridicule faith while claiming to follow science are actually acting in a manner where faith guides them.
