I don't know, that's an obscure hypothetical. The Archbishop and Nancy Pelosi are not. When she proudly and repeatedly proclaims that she supports abortion, she has abdicated her Catholicism. As such, she can't receive Communion.

Wouldn't the AB then be required to tell every other Catholic who supports that choice to also not engage in the sacraments? Which sins are OK? Supporting the death penalty seems to fly in the face of #6.

After reading a little more about this, apparently the AB is within his purview to make this decision per the Church.
My beliefs are my own, and I don't agree with their decision. I think it's a very slippery slope.

I'm not a theologian. Perhaps these questions would be better posed to Dave, but I imagine he has other pressing priorities right now. I just believe that anyone who proudly rejects the most fundamental precepts of Catholicism and champions the killing of unborn innocents without remorse or penance, like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden do every day, should not receive the body of Christ in Communion.

Unfortunately, God works after the fact. If not, Nancy might be covered in oozing pustules. When a "member" of the faith hypocritically flaunts her violation of arguably the most precious tenet of that faith, it's within the perview of the clergy to withhold the sacraments from her. As a Catholic theology teacher I can confidently affirm that what MDDad has said here is absolutely correct. According to Canon law (and contra Whoopi Goldberg's comments) it is precisely the Archbishop's role to make this determination in the case of public official who obstinately opposes the Church's moral teaching in an area such as abortion. As such, Nancy Pelosi is in a spiritual state of mortal sin and Archbishop Cordileone's edict to prevent her from receiving Holy Communion (in his jurisdiction) is meant as an act of mercy and fraternal correction, so that she might no bring further judgment upon herself by taking the Body and Blood of Christ in an unworthy manner (1 Corinthians 11:27-29). This is fundamental Catholic teaching on the Eucharist, and would apply to all baptized Catholics, which is why not all who attend Mass receive Communion (for various reasons). 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord.A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.By the way, Joe Biden is in exactly the same moral state as Nancy Pelosi vis-a-vis abortion. Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, D.C., or the Bishop of Wilmington (DE) could make the same pronouncement about the President....but I'm not holding my breath.

As a baptized and confirmed Catholic, I'm clear that I can't receive communion for LOTS of reasons. But I was always under the impression that was between me and God, and I'd be held accountable if I violated this.
Maybe this is the rub for me, Credo. If the Church is going to do this to Pelosi, why not everyone else, including those that support the death penalty?

In a pretty rare moment, Vinny talks politics.
