I was stunned to hear this. I Had followed this kid since he was a sophomore in high school, playing tight end for Santa Margarita. He was big with good speed and good hands. I had him pegged as a D1 player right away. When Harry Welch came to Santa Margarita with a no tight end offense he talked Max into playing tackle and the kid got up to 255 pounds as a junior, 304 as a senior. Over his last two years He was as good a high school O-lineman as I’ve ever seen in over 50 years of watching the games. I thought he was a lock for the NFL.
All American as a HS senior, ranked as the #53 prospect in the country, played in the Army AA GAME, started at left offensive tackle as a freshman at SC. They then probably ruined his career by switching him to center. Going into his senior year he was the #1 Ranked Center in the United States and considered a possible first round pick, but wrecked his knee, dropped down to the third round in the draft and I don’t think he ever recovered from the knee injury. He didn’t stick with San Diego and I heard later that he might’ve had problems with repeated concussions.
I don’t know how he passed away, but that 2011 Santa Margarita season was almost magical to follow, largely because of him. He seemed like a really nice kid and I feel for the family. Amazing..................Luca
