I don’t often bust out laughing when reading what is supposed to be a serious article, but somehow while screwing around on the internet I landed on the "Columbia Journalism Review" and found an article entitled:
"Why we capitalize ‘Black’ (and not ‘white’)
I was curious because I’ve seen the word “black” capitalized recently when it refers to, well, black individuals. We’ve always capitalized words when they refer to a specific nationality, like Italians or Nigerians or Chinese. But not "blacks" or "whites", which just refers to heterogeneous groups loosely defined only by skin color. But there's been an attempt to change this. Why is that? Wonder no more, because:
"AT THE COLUMBIA JOURNALISM REVIEW, we capitalize Black, and not white, when referring to groups in racial, ethnic, or cultural terms. For many people, Black reflects a shared sense of identity and community. White carries a different set of meanings; capitalizing the word in this context risks following the lead of white supremacists……….."
Oh. I thought maybe it was just another politically correct, pretentious sophistry developed by some woke pseudo- intellectual weenie. But now I see………………..Luca
