Because without officials, it's just recess. A high school football game without officials is like sex without the clap. It's more fun and carefree. I'm sure it is .. but IF one thought she/he/both was safe and then caught said clap, we all know what would happen.

Zebra, since there seems to be a shortage of officials, does that mean we won't have to put up with that ridiculous decision to have seven officials at our league games?

You'd have to ask the coaches that made those decisions, we just show up and do games. I like 7 man, it's better coverage for us BUT only if we have trained deep flank officials, which is where we struggle, frankly. If and when we get back to normal, 7 man will be back, many of the leagues want it but can't afford it. There is a trend of starting to go with college mechanics like Florida and Texas, and they use 7 man crews. Have been for a long time.

How do the schools pay for all of this? No fans = admission fees and with school being out the entire year, no ASB funds either.
IMO, it’s a total loss and not worth the five meaningless games.

If seven officials are better than five, aren't nine better than seven, or eleven better than nine? It seems that the more officials there are, the more they feel the need to justify themselves by throwing more flags. Games with seven officials are noticeably longer than those with five. High school games shouldn't take 3 1/2 hours to complete.

IMO, there's good justification for 6 & 7. Some NCAA leagues use 8. We don't feel a need to justify being out there in 7 man games, the coaches ask for it. My crew chief insists we keep track of the crew penalties on our game cards, not just our own. We have a debrief report we send in to him justify the call in case a coach sends in film, our assignor can know what and why we called something. We also have to give examples of calls we didn't make and reason why. This is my 20th season and I've kept my penalty cards over the last 14. They don't reflect an increase in penalties for 7 man games, specifically OPI/DPI or DH. We have keys to watch in any crew configuration. Being a flank official is hard and get's much harder when we have to watch multiple keys ... the snap ... tackle and/or TE on our side, and the contact between receiver and DB, all at the same time while trying to recognize run/pass. And when the play starts knowing if you have to run with the receiver or stay home for run or screen. The RPO makes that difficult now. The passing some teams do requires more coverage. 6 & 7 man crews can take the burden off the flanks for run support. 8 is crazy lazy I say ... but if you want to pay for 9 or 11 officials I'm sure we would take that deal also. It's all up to those coaches. Games with 7 officials get televised, alot which builds in sponsor timeouts and longer half times. We don't get paid by the hour so do ya think we like being out there for 3-4 hours on top of getting to the stadium 2 hours early for our pre-game we go through every single game. Newport Rib will only stay open till 11 for us .. LOL
One of the mechanic changes I cannot stand was to move the Umpire into the offensive backfield. Puts him in a really bad pos to call inside fouls on defensive linemen and gives the flanks no help with illegal snaps or signal calls.
One mechanic change I like which will be new next year is switching the side officials at half time and working each sideline. Some guys think they get picked on .. officials and coaches. That's an NCAA mechanic also.

I agree ... I think injuries will increase, with a serious one possibly jeopardizing next season only months away. That's a call I can't make.

I was a huge proponent of playing in December (or better yet, not delaying the season at all) because I truly felt for the Seniors whom likely would never play again.
You can tell decisions are being made by people with no knowledge of the actual workings of high school football. Wigod included

Seriously, at this point the attendance at these games across county will be miniscule... most stadium can handle a crowd safely spread out no different than an outdoor restaurant.... STUCK on STUPID.

It really is beyond stupid. The whole approach has been ineffective, yet they continue to carry on as though they have a f'n clue.

Whats absurd is most scientists will say we don't really know everything about this, yet some pseudo health expert with a fraction of knowledge will tell you what is better for you, child and family. Stay home, sit down, shut and wear a mask. Hey Bick, what are you getting from LA, Sunset, District, CIF or County on being at games? Are you in the booth usually? Ain't that enclosed!

I assume I'll be doing the games, but there's no booth at Los Al HS. Bleacher broadcasts here we come...I think.

Little known fact. Frog coached from the booth for almost 10 years...
Miss those days
