Most if not all of us have been informed that as of Jan. 1, we will all need to separate our food waste from all other trash, place the food waste in separate bags, and place them in our green recycle trash cans instead of the brown general trash cans. That's because all food waste will be recycled as compost. Yeah, right? That raises several questions:
a. If I don't do that, if I continue to co-mingle my food and regular trash in the same bag, how will anyone know?
b. Will there be special agents assigned to cut open every bag found in a brown trash can and inspect it to make sure it contains no food waste?
c. If it does, will those potato peels and chicken skins be fingerprinted to identify me as the criminal offender?
d. Will a SWAT team from the police department and D.A.'s office break into my home to arrest me?
e. Am I at risk of being confused as an unarmed black man and getting shot?
f. And perhaps most importantly, who is the workforce who will perform the composting of huge mountains of food waste every week, where will it be done, and who will pay for it?
Top that, Illinois. Good luck.

Good luck. Nope, not even going to try. We have separated our trash for over 20 years (recyclable from non-recyclable) but never food from non-food. It has never been mandatory, but the community HAS provided separate receptacles for each. If we want compost, we get (or build) our own mechanism to produce it.

Whenever I want compost, I just turn on CNN or MSNBC.
