Being a baseball ump in the City of Lakewood parks & rec was one of my first jobs as a teen. Had a lot of fun trying to one-up each other on our ring up calls...on 8 yr old kids, no less. Pretty embarrassing looking back on it. This one might've taken the prize in baseball.

As always, if anyone is interested in officiating HS football, hit me up and we'll talk. Sports officials are a dwindling breed.

Been there, done that. Besides, I'm perfecting the oh so important job of on air critique of officials and coaches' calls.
Way more fun than getting followed to your car by upset parents of 10 yr old park league kids. Howard, the rec leader had to keep the wolves at bay.
Good times.

If I pick up a tail I usually just pull up into the local PD parking lot. I did have an irate parent follow me all the way into my driveway once ... she even brought it up at our divorce.

Now that's funny.
When did you start this career in abject masochism?

Not HS but here's a list of the NFL Crews for 2019/20. Now you know who is who when talking smack about a call. Notes of interest are: 4 Referees are from Orange County, 6 crew members are from Orange County, 1 replay official and 1 replay assistant are from Orange County. A kid off my HS crew made it to the replay booth the past few years. I know of 1 Crew Chief and 3 crew members that have retired in the past few years. OC has a strong presence in NFL officiating.

Now that's funny. When did you start this career in abject masochism? I stopped Coaching in 99 due to the parents just being complete asshats … I have thick skin but I was done. So I put on stripes the next year and found out that I, myself, was a complete asshat as a coach. My coaching helps me with my patience on the sidelines with the team staffs. I've had the opportunity to be a back judge or umpire, but I prefer to work with the chain crew. Keeps me in the game, reminds me of me stalking sidelines in my younger days and I have someone to talk to. This will be my 19th year and 17th with the same crew chief. Also, umpired softball (HS, JC) for 35 years, Lacrosse 5 years, MiLB for 3 years and Arena 2 when that was around for a year. I've always been small and second best in athletics, my calling was coaching and officiating.

So Bick u r presently a HSF zebra! The 3-4 years of youth sports officiating filled my cup enough to keep me away from that hobby. Now I just sit up in the booth and criticize them.

We do the same to announcers ... but I've tried announcing at my daughters powder puff game, it ain't as easy as it sounds. We've tried to get officials in the TV booths for HS games, they won't do it. I just eye roll when they get the down and distance or a penalty signal wrong. Announcers (except JJ Jackson) are more tolerable than ex-player Dads and assistant coaches.

Ahhh...just loved it when some young catcher would leave the pitch "framed" for all to see how blind I was.
