Credo and Professor, So now MD has a roid rage problem and a lot of fights on campus? You guys are hilarious. What about MD's connection to the Russian mafia and Mexican drug cartels? I normally consider both of you as credible posters but this is a ridiculous reach and really scrapping the bottom of the barrel. I don’t know anything about roid rage or the frequency of on campus fights, outofstate. But given the article by Fryer ( who is generally - perhaps even notoriously - very tolerant regarding issues with Mater Dei), as well as the LA Times coverage and the lawsuits I think we can at least agree that there is a problem that needs to be dealt with. Before you can address a problem you at least have to acknowledge its existence………….Luca

Fair punishment needs to be handed out to the guilty students (which it has) and if any adult is proven to have done something wrong, and it was a clear dereliction of duty, they should be fired. Having said that, I don’t believe there is a culture of hazing at MD. The reality is that MD lives under a microscope. I am not defending what happened, but I would guess that if this happened at Los Amigos, Westminster, or Ocean View High Schools it would not be national news nor would would it be a popular topic on forums such as this. Nor would people be requesting confidential files from these schools via public records requests. I am willing to guess that kids fight at other high schools also. Those schools must have roid rage problems.

How will "additional security personnel and safety protocols" prevent a disgruntled nutjob from calling in a bomb threat?

How will "additional security personnel and safety protocols" prevent a disgruntled nutjob from calling in a bomb threat? It won't and nothing can prevent a sicko from calling in a threat, or worse which is taking action. But there are a lot of sickos out there so extra security is always welcome. It also perhaps offers some modicum of comfort to spooked students and faculty.

All the rethoric and proposals for adding security and hardening targets will have the primary effect of making the potential victims feel more comfortable...and not much else.

True. And the concept of "increasing mental health treatment" is somewhat of a dodge, also. There are more disturbed individuals out there than could possibly be effectively monitored. You might prevent the occasional rampage, but not many. Deciding who is likely to go off at any given time is like trying to decide which popcorn kernel is going to pop next. Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of unpredictable biologic/psychological pathology........Luca
