I think the left has it all wrong. It seems like they believe that the purpose of government is to protect them. Perhaps, but for me the main purpose is to protect our individual liberty. Look at the Bill of Rights.
So why is that important? I think it is founded on the fact that people are evil, for the most part. A leftist might say that people are good. That is not the case, and that is why the Constitution is written the way it is - to protect us from evil tyranny.
I suspect most of the posters here are Catholic. That is great. I am not, but I consider Catholics saved and Christian. In the King James Version of the Bible, Psalm 118 is the center chapter. There are 594 chapters before Psalm 118 and 594 after. Interestingly if you total 594 and 594 you end up with 118:8. What does Psalm 118:8 say.
Psalm 118:8 -- It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man.
That is the point of the U.S. Constitution, IMO. Putting our confidence in man can lead us amok. Look at the DOJ, the FBI, and the last election. Hopefully the Supreme Court will rule appropriately on these things.
Fun Fact: 118 is the center of the Bible, right? Psalm 119 is the longest chapter and Psalm 117 is the shortest in the Bible. What is between 119 and 117? 118.

I think the left has it all wrong. It seems like they believe that the purpose of government is to protect them. I think historically both liberals and conservatives have felt that the purpose of government is to protect its citizens, and they differed only in approach and magnitude. That is still true of conservatives, but the left has morphed into something frighteningly different. They now believe the purpose of government is to deconstruct the nation it is supposed to preserve, to tear it down into chaos and anarchy, and then (I assume) to rebuld it into something that a not single liberal seems able to articulate. It seems like lunacy to want to tear down something without a clear vision of what you want to replace it with, but that seems to be where liberals are at. Chaos and anarchy have their own inertia and energy, and it is dangerous to use chaos and anarchy as a steppingstone to something you can't even describe in anything but platitudes, buzzwords and catchphrases. That is the state of liberalism in America today, and it is horrifying when you consider they control our education systems and our media.

As usual MDDad, good points. You are right, I want protection and will pay taxes to keep people from harming me and my family. Great point.

As usual MDDad, good points. You are right, I want protection and will pay taxes to keep people from harming me and my family. Great point. I want protection from what I can not necessarily protect myself such as national security and sovereignty. I also want protection ta uphold law & order, that being our police. However I draw the line where Liberals cross in having government(s) protect me from myself. That is why I often call myself a Republitarian.

I can almost justify some "protect me from myself" measures, like having to wear seatbelts or getting vaccinated for polio. But there's an old saying that the rights of your fists end where the rights of my face begin, and that's the line that's been crossed.
A mentally ill man who thinks he's a woman should be given sympathy and civil rights. But his rights to pretend he's a woman end when he demolishes real women in weightlifting, swimming competitions or MMA octagons. His rights to pretend he's a woman also end when he walks into a women's lockerroom or restroom with his dong hanging out in front of real women and little girls. They have rights too, and in those cases they certainly trump his. And that's what liberals will not accept under any circumstances.
