Some guy on TOB proposed naming an Orange County all-star high school football team for the period 2000 to 2021. Not a single member took him up on it, probably because they're all a bunch of woke sissies who don't know how to spell sports. I know we have enough expertise and longevity hear to take on that task. Here are my choices for the best players by position in our county since 2000:
Quarterback
Starter - J.T. Daniels, Mater Dei
Backup - Bryce Young, Mater Dei
Also considered - Aaron Corp, Orange Lutheran, Cody Fajardo, Servite and Matt Barkley, Mater Dei
Runningback (2)
Chane Moline, Mission Viejo
Temitope Sonuyi, Esperanza
Also considered - Robbie Dubois, Mission Viejo
Wide Receivers (4)
Tetairoa McMillan, Servite
Thomas Duarte, Mater Dei
Amon-ra St. Brown, Mater Dei
Bru McCoy, Mater Dei
Disclaimer - I wanted like hell to put John Humphreys, Corona del Mar, on this list, but I didn't know whom to take off. McMillan, Duarte and McCoy all played defense as well, and St. Brown was an outstanding punt and kickoff return guy. Humphreys would definitely be my #5.
Tight End (1)
Blake Ayles, Orange Lutheran
Offensive Line (5)
Khaled Holmes, Mater Dei
Matt Kalil, Servite
Max Tuerk, Santa Margarita
Chase Moline, Mission Viejo
Kyle Murphy, San Clemente
Defensive Line (4)
Hero Kanu, Santa Margarita
Nick Reed, Mission Viejo
Troy Niklas, Servite
Mason Graham, Servite
Linebackers (4)
Chris Galippo, Servite
Colin Schooler, Mission Viejo
Jordan Zumwalt, Edison
Jed Collins, Mission Viejo
Also considered - Aaron Porter, La Habra, Tre Madden, Mission Viejo and Butch Pau'u, Servite
Defensive Backs (4)
Clark Phillips, La Habra
A.J. Martinez, Edison
Olaijah Griffin, Mission Viejo
Max Redfield, Mission Viego
Also, Steve Fryer recently listed the 33 county players he considered the best he's seen in his 33 years of covering county sports. So here are my Top Dozen, in alphabetical order:
Blake Ayles, Orange Lutheran
J.T. Daniels, Mater Dei
Thomas Duarte, Mater Dei
Chris Galippo, Servite
Khaled Holmes, Mater Dei
Matt Kalil, Servite
A.J. Martinez, Edison
Tetairoa McMillan, Servite
Clark Phillips, La Habra
Colin Schooler, Mission Viejo
Max Tuerk, Santa Margarita
Bryce Young, Mater Dei
And the single best football player I've seen since 2000 - J.T. Daniels
Please make your own comments and changes. You can use whatever critieria you want. However, please do not consider what players may have done after high school, whether they became great college and pro players, or they became drug addicts or went to prison.
