A lot has been bantered about over the current state of HS football. Definitely not like it was back in the day as the recreational nature of the sport has for the most part been overtaken by the competitiveness. For some, it's lost its purity, for others it's evolving into a far more sophisticated sport than before.
Rather than use this thread as yet another finger pointing exercise at who "cheats" better, let's focus on the underlying fundamentals, or "incentives" as Tom Sowell would call them, that have caused the changes. Feel free to start another thread if you feel the need to hijack thread one into that rabbit hole with memes and the ubiquitous finger pointing.
Here's a few thoughts to chew on.
Technology has been a big part of the advancement. Sideline video now makes for a huge advantage over those who don't have it. Hudl makes breaking down film so much easier than the past when EVERYONE would have to sit thru an entire game film breakdown on Saturday morning. Social media now allows kids to market themselves to colleges that would otherwise not have seen them. This is mostly true for the FCS and lower level schools in other parts of the country that don't have the recruiting budgets.
College education costs have skyrocketed making athletic scholarships perhaps the only way a kid can get to college without having to take on crippling debt. It's provided a much bigger incentive for players to get training at an earlier age for parents who could barely afford paying the family rent, let alone sending their kids to college.

I blame everything on social media and technology from the state of the nation today to present day high school football . It has changed the landscape dramatically from "Back in the Day" as you refer @bick. I believe "Social Media" directly resulted in our biggest elections thus causing the present state of the union. In HSF and collegiate football, social networking is building teams and recruits. It's a powerful tool to bring talent together. And dont get me started on the comment below..., "College education costs have skyrocketed making athletic scholarships perhaps the only way a kid can get to college without having to take on crippling debt. It's provided a much bigger incentive for players to get training at an earlier age for parents who could barely afford paying the family rent, let alone sending their kids to college." ~ BickThe cost for education in this country is outrageous on any evaluation sometimes running 30, 40, 60 THOUSAND a year in which an institution sits on BILLIONS in endowments. The Democrats rail against "Corporate" America for such business tactics. Everyone silent on this one, in fact they support doubling down on cutting these institutions breaks, student debt relief? Hmmm, students with less debt? More money in their pocket? Raise tuition! And all this at the expense of the US Tax payer! Academia off the hook! Apologies for bringing up politics into the HSF Forum

Everyone knows we will have new football leagues in Orange County this fall based on two years of Calpreps ratings. So I asked a friend of mine (a computer jockey) what would it look like if that methodology were applied across the entire Southern Section. It took him about 15 minutes to come up with the results. Here are the top six leagues in the section if the same methods were employed. Travel issues aside, we would be able to watch some very good games. (O.C. schools in red)
League 1 Mater Dei St. John Bosco Corona Centennial Mission Viejo Sierra Canyon JSerra
League 2 Los Alamitos Orange Lutheran Gardena Serra Santa Margarita Long Beach Poly Rancho Cucamonga
League 3 Oaks Christian San Clemente Murrieta Valley Servite St. Bonaventure Warren
League 4 La Serna Edison Bishop Amat Chaminade Upland Palos Verdes
League 5 Damien Oak Hills Chaparral Yorba Linda Inglewood Citrus Valley
League 6 Corona del Mar Vista Murrieta Cajon Tesoro Etiwanda San Juan Hills

Interesting certainly but maybe outside the present top league for next season in OC I think all our new divisions are just as competitive w/o the travel. I know our new league most will make the trip to SJH, Tesoro, Yorba Linda and Villa Park, not likely heading out to 909 every other week for Cajon, Etiwanda and Vista Murrieta!

I agree. Orange County will be the prototype test case for how well this works, and going into it there seems to be no real downside, except that historical league names and histories are lost. Elsewhere, it's high time Long Beach Poly was moved out of the Moore League, and there are many other similar examples.

While there's something nostalgically romantic about playing every sport per the school's league alignment, I like the competitive grouping better, and don't understand why it wouldn't be the law of the land for every sport.

All I keep thinking looking forward is how many teams will be 5-5 each season!
Also of note, a possible benefit of the new system is kids actually staying with, deciding to actually play when a league is competitive. I mean how many guys really want to go out on the field in a sport where they are perennial bottom dwellers of some league they are associated with due to history?
Yet another aspect, will kids be less likely to move about and possibly stick to their local school now the the team is in a league that actually has a chance due to this new realignment?
Agree MDDad, we will be a testing ground or prototype if any of this ends with good results.

I spoke with a coach from winner's circle today. They had a showcase at Mater Dei for Trinity league schools. The game has changed. I'm, once again, glad I grew up and lived most of my life in a better era.

Well there was 8-10 coaches and about 20 kids (from Winner's Circle) at a Hawaiian BBQ place and they said they were at Mater Dei for a Trinity League showcase. I guess they were uninformed or not telling the truth?

The only "showcase" is tomorrow afternoon, for college coaches. All the other sessions have just been regular conditioning drills and scheme installs. In fact, spring football doesn't even start until today.

Yeah, I just got to the bottom of it. Winner's Circle rented the practice field at Mater Dei to hold their own football camp. It had nothing to do with Mater Dei or the other Trinity League schools.
