But wait, how will all those lower middle-class Polynesian and African-American families in Oceanside and Carlsbad suddenly be able to afford JSerra's $21,550 annual tuition? Or are you implying that there will be steep tuition "discounts" for talented athletes not available to other students? Why, that would mean JSerra is "going out" and "snatching up" players from over 30 miles away who never had "any intention" of attending a tiny Catholic school over 30 miles away, right?

Of course I'm being facetious, but that recipe has been tried at JSerra before. No school in my memory has ever recruited talented athletes as openly, or financed them as completely, as JSerra did from 2016 to 2019. Then, when the pot of gold at the end of rainbow got disillusioned with how his son was being used and left the school, the whole thing fell apart and there was a mass exodus of football talent like we have rarely seen. It will be interesting to see if they try the same approach again.

Now it's a question of adding talent in key spots. I wouldn't have fired McKnight based on what I've seen (again, I don't know what went on behind closed doors)-but if you were going to fire him, this looks like a strong choice.

Now if they hired Troy Thomas-then I guarantee you that the financial aid budget would have went up quite a bit. Not hiring him a smart play-he's good for 3-4 years max before he wears out his welcome. Santa Cruz may be there for 10-15 years.

He now has a proven resume of either leaving programs or being terminated after x years at a school. It can't be a coincidence when it's happened four times. I assume you use the term "financial aid budget" as a euphemism, because unless that "budget" goes up a lot, that train from Oceanside and Carlsbad will be irrelevant. I don't know Santa Cruz from Santa Claus, but I hope you're right. That program could really use some long term stability.

He played/coached in north SD County. Parents still live there. Might well have HS-age kids. Could be long term hire.
From what I know about Thomas (and having sent a daughter to JSerra)-I'm not sure he'd be a great fit there. What they really want is a Brett Kay clone (baseball).

Lenny Vandermade was a classmate of Brett Kay. Same mold. A couple years younger. Should have tried for him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I get the feeling that the train north from Oceanside will be filling up.... From what I read he sounds like a good guy and a solid hire. But, look, you could take every eligible kid from Oceanside and North SD County and, at best, you're looking at 3rd place in the Trinity League as its currently made up. Kids are going to commute close to an hour each way--and parents 90 minutes each way for all road games--for that? No way.

And JSerra currently runs a pick up at SJC train station. They have had key athletic contributors from that area in the past. And over time kids bond with teammates who live closer to school and start to crash there. There is only one Trinity League. Parents/kids will make sacrifices to play with/against the best. Unparalled exposure to college scouts.
