In 58 years, Newport Harbor is 156-158-16 in Sunset League play, with five league titles and no CIF championships. If they are the flagship, then that is one pathetic navy.

Griffins had a come from behind 22-21 "win" in one half of a game v Serra Gardena yesterday.
Trailing 21-7 after Serra scored on first three possessions with 2 long scores from Cincere Rhaney and another from Zacharyus Williams, Griffins Anthony League put the team on his back rushing and receiving and Manoah Faupusa punched in a short TD and 2 pt conversation for the winner with a minute to go. QB Alonzo Esparza came up big on 3rd and 4th down multiple times with his arm and feet.
Defense shut down the Cavs the rest of the way.
Really fun way to kick off 2023

It was an official game format for 30 minutes. Then it went into situational scrimmage without keeping score.

Micheal Huntley called out the Sunset League in the OC Register by going 1-5 last week. His claim, maybe accurate, that the Sunset is no longer the best public school league in OC. Its a bit early is season to claim this after the opponents the Sunset teams lost to. And like I told ya, Palos Verdes is legit, beat two Sunset teams in Edison and CDM back to back, no easy feat, rarely done, and maybe you could count the county public schools that could do this on one hand.
With that @bick, what have you heard about the leagues future, I've heard everything from it wont exists t all to it will just have a different group of teams starting in 2024...?

Huntley is a South Coast homer but they've only got 4 teams. Our top 4 v theirs and it's pretty close. If we beat Mission, and Edison beats San Clemente on Friday, a reasonable person would give us the nod.
Los Al - Mission Edison - San Clemente CDM - Capo Valley Newport - Tesoro...Newport won
Haven't heard anything about league names beyond the Trinity yet.

Per Calpreps project a match-up: (We will know more after next week). LA 35 MV 34 SC 22 Edison 19 CDM 28 CV 22 NH 17 Tesoro 14 (played) I took a look at other factors... leagues are almost dead even between Sunset & South Coast w/ South Coast power rating @ 30.97 & Sunset 30.55. (Combining the ratings of top 4 teams). However there is a huge gap in SOS with South Coast @ 14.87 and Sunset @ 28.95. The Sunset teams have stepped up against tougher competition. Mr. Huntley in the business of reporting on HSF might want to consider this a bit. Who would thunk LA & MV would be going into that game both with "L's" in their previous respected games....

Some interesting news from CIF on the league name changes. As I understand it, it will be up to the leagues to decide what their names will be. CIF is not part of those choices.
My sense of that is the Sunset will continue to live on.

That would require objectivity but what media guys are? Truth is the guys at Sunset Rewind called us the best public school league in the state, if not the nation. As much as I like Mo and Kevin, that was a reach given the Big West Upper would likely go 6-0 v. us last year if you went 1-6 v. 1-6.

...the Big West Upper would likely go 6-0 v. us last year if you went 1-6 v. 1-6. I think a better barometer would be if all six Big West Upper teams played all six Sunset teams last season. The results look like they would have been the following, indicating the two leagues are actually very close. Big West Upper6-0 Corona Centennial 3-3 Murrieta Valley 3-3 Norco 3-3 Chaparral 2-4 Roosevelt 2-4 Vista Murrieta19-17 TotalSunset5-1 Los Alamitos 5-1 Edison 5-1 Corona del Mar 2-4 Newport Harbor 0-6 Huntington Beach 0-6 Fountain Valley17-19 Total
