With the new 4 team top public league slated in OC for '24, seems like the sun will truly set on the 2nd longest tenured league in OC. Got to believe Edison & Los Al will be moved up. Maybe shuffling the deck isn't such a bad thing?
This year's prediction...
1. Los Al - lots of underclassmen return from last year's team should help overcome loss of 3 dudes on offense.
2. Edison - always solid, but will have lots of holes to fill.
3. CDM - despite Newport bringing in a few xfers, SKings seem to be better coached and will find a way... Again.
4. Newps - the best of the rest and should be pretty exciting on offense this year... But defense wins games in this league.
5. HB - look out for frosh phenom QB. If they surround with some talent, might surprise a couple teams.
6. Le Barons - the Danny DeVito to Edison's Schwarzenegger in Twins. Only one more year of this Sunset torture for them before they tear up another league. Look for them to make some noise if they make the playoffs as an AL this year.

I would love to hear the rationale for making the top OC league a four-team league when all the others will be six. It makes absolutely no sense in any way I can fathom. Why burden the four best teams in the county with having to find two more nonleague opponents when almost every other high school team is already playing league games. It's an almost impossible task.
I almost have to think that the principals and athletic directors who voted for this scenario are left-wing Democrats, because they sure as hell can't think rationally.

Agree with dad. It’s sort of like punishing teams for being good. The good publics already have a hard time getting games and usually can’t afford to travel like the Trinity teams. They have a difficult time filling a 5 game preseason let alone a 7 game preseason and at least one of those games has to be week 6 or 7 when everyone else has league games. Good luck filling your schedule MV, LA, Edison and whoever else gets placed in that league.

You two are nuts. It's a piece of cake getting local teams to want to play Los Al.

Looks like Edison is getting serious.

So if Edison and LA leave Sunset will others step into that league?

Yes, but it doesn't mean the four remaining teams will stay together in that league, nor does it mean the league will keep the same name.

You mean every other 6 team league might begin playing week 6? I'm sure the powers that be figured out that would leave no one available in the area who even COULD play us.

You mean every other 6 team league might begin playing week 6? Of course. How else could they play five league games unless they start in week six? I think it's just as likely that they never even thought about that.

I did a really shitty job of being sarcastic. I'm thinking AZ might be a candidate for those 4 teams in week 6 assuming they'll all be on a bye week 7

The Sunset League is the greatest high school football league in Orange County history. Period. With the league possibly only having one more year of life, I thought some people might enjoy a stroll down memory lane:
Most Years In League 75 - Huntington Beach 58 - Newport Harbor 54 - Marina 49 - Edison & Fountain Valley 37 - Anaheim
Most League Wins 185 - Edison 167 - Anaheim 156 - Newport Harbor 124 - Fountain Valley 118 - Huntington Beach & Santa Ana
Most League Losses 281 - Huntington Beach 205 - Marina 158 - Newport Harbor 125 - Fountain Valley 87 - Santa Ana
Highest Winning Percentage (Minimum 50 Games) .756 - Anaheim .736 - Los Alamitos .725 - Edison .700 - Esperanza .581 - Fullerton
Most League Championships 20 - Anaheim & Edison 16 - Los Alamitos 9 - Fountain Valley & Santa Ana 8 - Esperanza 6 - Fullerton
Most CIF Championships 5 - Edison 3 - Anaheim 2 - Fountain Valley & Santa Ana 1 - Corona del Mar & Los Alamitos

How about most consecutive undefeated seasons in league?
Anaheim '52-56 Fullerton '48-50 Los Alamitos '20-22... And still counting

I remember Max Cady talking about Newport Harbor being the flagship of the Sunset league.
Pretty obvious this is Edison's realm.
