I used to love those shows. You’d get to see some great planes: B-52s, B17s, F4U Corsairs, P38’s, C5As, etc. The Blue Angels would fly directly over my house, and I could actually make out the pilots’ faces when they were practicing a day or two before the show. I miss that.
The last time I went, I took two of my young sons with me and some guy face planted an F 86 right in front of us and slid on fire about a mile down the runway before exploding. The poor pilot never had a chance and I tried to explain to my kids he was actually OK, all part of the show.

I loved them too, especially when my two sons were old enough to go. I remember the excitement the first year they parked a B-2 bomber at El Toro and being amazed how small it was. My office was on the second floor just off Bake and Toledo in Irvine, and we could watch the Blue Angels practice for days before the air show.
On the other hand, watching that video above is 10 1/2 minutes of my life I wish I could get back.

It annoys me when they put these cartoon like pictures of non existent weapon systems on these videos as click bait. The F-22/A-10 hybrid pictured above exists nowhere except in the mind of some junior high dramatist. The A 10 has done well but it’s a death trap against a modern air defense system. Slow and as stealthy as a skyscraper, it’s still effective versus poorly equipped militaries but its days are numbered.
Chad Henning was an Outland Trophy winner from the Air Force Academy and flew A 10s in Iraq. He also played several seasons for the Cowboys, I think.
