Nellie Fox was an excellent player, but he was a slap hitter who concentrated on making contact. Yes, he never struck out 20 times in a season, but he also hit only 35 homeruns in 19 seasons, less than two per year. Compare that to Joe DiMaggio, who had seven seasons in which he had more homeruns than strikeouts. He finished with 361 homers and only 369 strikeouts in his career. That's truly amazing.

Amazing stats for DiMaggio. Fellow Yankee Yogi Berra had six seasons with more homers than strikeouts, finishing with 358 career homers and only 414 strikeouts. Two incredible hitters. |

The ability and willingness of pitchers in those days to act like men becomes more amazing as time goes by.
On June 14, 1974, Nolan Ryan pitched 13 innings against the Boston Red Sox. He faced 58 batters, struck out 19, walked 10 and threw 235 pitches. He started his next game four days later, and pitched complete games in three of his next four starts.
He never had a sore arm.
