And with 24 schools making up D 1/2, EVERYONE makes the playoffs with the Open 8, & the remaining 16 getting in for the other division. And the point of league play is...?? The CIF-SS continues to make fools of themselves. Not only is their ranking formula ridiculously complicated, but they can't even do easy arithmetic correctly. In the second column from the right for final 2018 Calpreps power rankings, they have St. John Bosco ranked below Orange Lutheran and JSerra. That obviously never happened, and it adds even more doubt to the CIF's ability to do anything correctly if it involves numbers or logic. Yeah, I was wondering how Edison, after placing 2nd & 3rd the past 2 seasons in the Sunset behind Los Al, managed to have a rating that was 12 spots better than LA. I get math problems can happen on spreadsheets, but the logic behind EVERY team being guaranteed a playoff spot, seems to have missed a very clear new incentive created by this. That incentive is to LOSE so you don't end up in the open division, and actually have a shot at winning a ring.

I just assume that the CIF ranking system, much like the American left, is just too brilliant for us to comprehend. In my own ranking system that I developed with a friend about 15 years ago, my 18-team Division 3 has: #6 - Los Alamitos #7 - Capistrano Valley #9 - Villa Park #10 - Tesoro #14 - La Habra #16 - Edison

There's a huge bust in the formula. This will likely get re-done... The top 15 teams per calpreps in 2018 were: Mater Dei SJ Bosco Corona Centennial Oaks Christian JSerra Mission Viejo Grace Brethren Bishop Amat Sierra Canyon Upland Calabasas Orange Lutheran Rancho Verde Norco Corona Del Mar calpreps.com/2018/ratings/Southern_all.htmCIFSS formula shows:Bishop DIEGO Mater Dei Orange Lutheran JSerra SJ Bosco Bishop Amat Serra Oaks Christian Mission Viejo Chaminade Calabasas Sta Margarita Servite San Clemente Notre Dame (SO) Corona Centennial My sense of this is there was some sort of transposition error of the entire column. As you can imagine, this is making a significant difference of where schools were ranked and placed.

Again, it took five months to come with those rankings, and in all that time nobody had the ability to see those kinds of obvious blunders? The whole thing is laughable.

Don't you think there will be feed back immediately from the coaches around the SS? Hey MDDad did you make it to the intra-squad MD on Friday night? Any thoughts...?

I'd bet they got some feedback and an offer to fix it a few hours ago.

I'm not going to get involved in the interminable back and forth regarding the current degraded status of HSFB, but I have to ask all you guys:
Why do you really give a shit when these teams are so stocked with and dominated by recruited and out-of-the-area players who are there primarily for publicity, and have little to no connection with the traditions or the mission of parochial football?
Why do you give a flying fornication which admissions department out-works and out performs the others? How is this is any different from, say, a 2-year and out JC football program?.............................Luca

Luca, what would you prefer we do instead? Is engaging in "the interminable back and forth regarding the current degraded status" of national politics really that much more palatable? Maybe it's me, but I can't spend all my time thinking about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or aborted fetal body parts, or Nancy Pelosi's dementia, or guys who wake up a different "gender" every morning, or why the hell David beat Goliath. Do you have another topic in mind?

(By the way, to see my alma mater reach a list like that in this sport puts a smile on my face ) and the CIF list looks like a joke? No disrespect to San Clemente and its excellent program but didn't CDM finish with a better record and BEAT them? How can CC be #3 on one list and #16 on another... A transposition error? If so wouldn't all this be fixed within hours?

To MDDad's point, it's a pretty clear by-product of a complicated formula.
His idea of 1/3 calpreps 2 yr ago + 2/3 calpreps last year is spot on. The only modifier I'd add would be some metric of playoff performance. This would likely cause teams not making playoffs to drop down divisions.
I'm just wondering what they're trying to accomplish that led them to such a complicated set of formulas.

The only modifier I'd add would be some metric of playoff performance. But playoff performance is already reflected in the Calpreps power ratings. Why would you want to factor it in twice?

If you don't make the playoffs, I think you should drop a division.
Weaker teams in tough leagues have an inflated calpreps rating because of the strength of schedule from their league.
Conversely, strong teams in weak leagues (La Habra & CDM prior to last year) have a deflated calpreps rating for the same reason, and it keeps them in lower divisions because of it.
Based on their performance last year, CDM is arguably a D1 team. But because the still have the PCL league membership from 2017 in the equation, they're kept down.

Looks like the Griffins landed the "next Bosco QB". Imagine that.

Looks like the Griffins landed the "next Bosco QB". Imagine that. Good news for Bosco's Trinity League rivals; bad news for Los Al's League rivals.
