I didn't know where else to put this, and I didn't want to start yet another thread, so I'll put it here:
Can anyone explain to me the reasons and significance of celebrating Juneteenth throughout the country? I understand that it is a Texas holiday marking the date the last slaves in Texas were freed. However, even that is incorrect. The Emancipation Proclamation, effective Jan. 1, 1863, freed all slaves in the seceded states 2 1/2 years before the Juneteenth date. Slavery remained legal in the Union states until the passage of the 13th Amendment in December, 1865, or six months after the Juneteenth date. Thus, during those intervening six months, slavery remained legal in over half the nation.
So what is the reason for the celebration, except as an excuse for more people to get out on the streets, drink and get rowdy?

Since Cuomo gave all state employees the day off, I would say it is being used to buy votes.
Also, my bank closed at 1:00 pm today, with no notice other than a note on the door that they were closing early in observance of it. What does closing half a day accomplish other than fuck up my schedule?
If we are going to celebrate each and every historical achievement, why don't we close for the day the wheel was invented, for the day the first home got indoor plumbing or the date that the first phone call was made on an iPhone. I am tired of all these phony observations that are becoming reasons why people get days off while still getting paid. The hundreds of holidays that forced closure of commerce contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire & I see history repeating itself.

It's impossible for a brick and mortar bank to take a knee, so closing at 1:00 is their next best gesture of supplication. It's all bullcrap gesturing. And as for all these meaningless holiday, whatever the hell ever happened to Kwanzaa? Seems like it kind of petered out.

Imagine that...white people at the root of black movements.
Maybe this was what Malcolm X was talking about?

I guess it's a tough concept to understand you can appreciate some aspects of people without agreeing with everything a person has said or done.
Exhibit A of the Cancel Culture.

As if we needed more proof of just how ignorant and clueless most of these "protesters" are, they have torn down a statue of poet John Greenleaf Whittier in the town that was named for him. Whittier was one of the most vocal and influential abolitionists of the 1830's and 1840's. These people are redefining the meaning of the word stupid.

You mean the mob tearing down / defacing ANY statues wasn't evidence enough? The ignorance would more appropriately apply to those leaders who aren't loudly condemning it, and are tacitly approving lawless mob action. The ignorance in thinking they can in some way control a mob is what's truly remarkable.

I guess they're ignorant if they try to stop them and ignorant if they don't. Works out well for you either way.

These phucking protesters are so ignorant of history that it's only a matter of time before they pull down statues of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Well Douglass was a republican, which is by definition, racist right?
Off with his head.
