Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York just announced today that all schools in the state are cleared to open for in-person instruction. Big blow to the teachers unions, which means it's a big win for the students and parents. The irony is that New York was such a disaster early on with COVID (Cuomo downplaying the virus in February, nursing homes deaths, mass transit use, etc.) and there was so much widespread infection that they have likely reached herd immunity, and so their new infections and deaths have slowed to a trickle. The lockdowns and masking orders in California are only stretching this thing out further and further, keeping kids from the schooling they need, and wrecking the Golden State economy. We're currently at ONE child under 18 in California who has died of COVID, out of over 50,000 confirmed cases (which means there are likely 10x that many actual infections)--and that child had underlying health issues. www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/COVID-19-Cases-by-Age-Group.aspx#Open the schools!

To be fair, Credo, you shouldn't post stuff like this without first giving guys like Cuomo an hour or two to change his mind. Stay tuned.

We always hear about how teachers are "essential" and so important, how they should be paid more. Yet at a time when other "essential" workers like nurses, policemen and the dude working at Home Depot show up for work, teachers unions grasp their pearls and claim we are trying to kill their members by having them go back to work. Please treat the teachers union the same as Reagan treated the air traffic controllers union when they went on strike back in the 80's. If any of their members don't show up for work after a specified date, they are fired & replaced. We have plenty of educated, unemployed folks in the country that could teach elementary & high school kids without having to get a teaching degree. Heck, I'll do it as long as I get to run my classroom the same way classrooms were run when I was at St. Pius & Servite. I guarantee the kids in my class will learn the subject I'm teaching. The best idea I’ve heard in decades.

Good point, but even Cryin' Chuck Schumer has gotten religion on this issue. It was only last week that Pelosi and others were flogging Trump for endangering kids' and teacher's lives by encouraging schools to re-open, a position supported by about 75% of parents (who happen to vote). TDS truly addles the brain--what a bunch of clowns.

So in NYC if just 3% of Covid tests come back positive for a virus with a 99.8% survival rate, kids can't go to school? Eric Garcetti might be off the hook for the title of stupidest mayor in America. But stay tuned.

Orange County qualified today to be taken off the state's "Watchlist" for COVID-19, having gotten below the established thresholds for Case Rate/100,000 and Testing Positivity Rate. If the county maintains these levels for 14 consecutive days then schools will be cleared for in-person instruction, which could be as early as mid-September. Keeping my fingers crossed. www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/COVID19CountyDataTable.aspx

Kids were on campus this week for orientation days, going through a brief rotation through their classes. Everyone has to wear masks but at least there was renewed life on campus, even if only briefly. Looking forward to having the boys back sooner rather than later, but I will tell you that having to speak at length while wearing a face covering is certainly miserable. But I'll take that over an extended period of Remote Learning via Zoom.

This, except the media has told us that protests did not increase our infection rate... Let’s just ignore the close contact, screaming in each others faces, giant crowds...

Knock on wood--Servite will be opening for in-person instruction on September 14. As long as Orange County remains off the watchlist (based on the previous criteria), then all K-12 schools in the county will be eligible to open as early as September 8. Some O.C. schools have already received waivers for K-6 in-person instruction.

Okay, so after Idiot Newsom moved the goalposts again with his new color-coded tier system, our school opening for in-person instruction is now pushed back a week to September 24. Everything is being rest to September and then we have to wait 14 days from then.
I'm only laying 50-50 odds that this actually happens. Newsom will find some way to prevent O.C. high schools from opening.

I really wish Servite, or any private school for that matter, would completely ignore Newsom's order and do what the parents & faculty decide. It would be a powerful statement and I don't believe Newsome is stupid enough to go after a private school, especially if it has a religious affiliation. He knows the optics would cement his removal from office.
I know it is easy for me to sit and say this, but all it would take is one school to stand up to him and the dominoes would fall quickly.

If it were that simple, probably Servite or some other private schools would have already done so. Unfortunately, the schools have to follow the mandates of the Orange County Department of Health, the Trinity League, the CIF and (in the case of Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Rosary) the Diocese of Orange. So it's much more complex than just flipping Newsom the bird.

This is beyond belief. Gee, I wonder who this teacher is voting for?
