So many states are divided within. Colorado is red in the north, south, (mostly), east and west, with a wide blue streak vertically on the map, down the middle. Illinois has bright blue Chicago, and, I believe red all around the rest of the state. Wishigan (Northern Michigan) is red I think, or at least has interests different from those of Detroit. Oregon and California are both redder, the farther from the coast you go.
I realize those statements are only mostly true, but the point is how do you split up the country with pockets of resistance in the big cities, or if you are a lefty, resistance outside the big cities? Do you become totalitarian, and force people out of your states? Do you set up some sort of transfer portal, where people can trade properties? That might work if the split is declared, but doesn't go into effect for a year or so. But, trading properties won't be easily accomplished, in large part because most lefties live in urban areas and most righties don't want to live that way.
I don't know what the answer is, but I'm sure the divorce would have to have borders that split apart existing states in some ways.
EDIT: I suppose the people who remain in a state that is dominated by the opposite ideology, would be controlled simply by being so outnumbered that they couldn't stop the federal institutions in their new country, from passing laws which they oppose, but are too heavily outnumbered to stop.
But state and local laws is a different story.

I think Illinois is mostly blue because of this one guy that lives in the south part.

Bill Maher at least has somewhat of a solution... Yes, his solution is for everyone to stfu about politics and stop worrying that not everyone agrees...does that sound like something the secessionists could do? I'm fine with it, but I doubt you'll get much support for the idea here.

Snowflake still cannot comprehend the difference between talking about secession and advocating secession. What a maroon.

Isn't the question really that the left doesn't want to live here with the right in power, and vice versa?
Both positions are dug in.
Now what? Wait for more violence?

I'm not sure... hundreds are pleading, "let's get along" or "I disagree with you, I don't hate you" and similar platitudes, but seemingly to no avail. My guess is, there is a power behind all this acrimony: Someone or some group that stands to benefit by keeping the turmoil stirred up. Not sure we can do anything until or unless he/she/they is/are exposed.

IF it comes to dividing us into two separate-but-equal(ish) kingdoms, here's what I recommend: of course, some of those lines are arbitrary as I tried to keep Northern US territory and Southern US territory conjoined together... and some folks won't be happy with being forced to move if they want to be with like-minded people, but if it comes to that, lines will have to be drawn AND some folks will complain about where.

Snowflake still cannot comprehend the difference between talking about secession and advocating secession. Sure I can. You're advocating secession. Dumb idea. Of course I shouldn't be surprised, but it's a dumb idea anyway.

Isn't the question really that the left doesn't want to live here with the right in power, and vice versa? No? Maybe you should stop assuming what the "left" thinks. You want to split and go your own way. The left doesn't think that way. I have never heard a leftist advocate for secession or divorce or going their own way...it's your idea, and a bad one at that.
