...Parochial schools did not have to cave in and abandon principles... This is the bottom line and highlights what I mean when I say that our OC parochial high schools were originally Catholic schools that happen to be private but are now Private schools that happen to be Catholic.

This is a tired topic and I don’t want to review all the history of the last 20 years that has led to the widespread conclusion as to where this fornicating mess all started and who is responsible. I am reminded of a post approximately 10 years ago when there was widespread unhappiness with Mission Viejo for all of their transfers and recruiting. One of the MV partisans insisted that the school wasn’t actively recruiting players, but one of our own current board members responded with the analogy of the Don Corleone family. They engaged in criminal activity for several years until they built up enough of an established empire such that they did not have to rely on criminal activity any longer. The analogy is as true today as it was then. It is also true that Bosco’s Jason Negro took the CIF violations to another level starting in 2010, but the process had been gaining momentum well before that in Orange County. Even so, there was no necessity to copy his model down here in OC, but people did and we know where it started. It started the same place where the basketball problems started and it’s not due to chance that Mater Dei has not had a serious contender in basketball for the last two plus decades nor in football over the last several years. As for the self evident “ THE BEST PLAYERS WANT TO PLAY ON THE BEST TEAMS, WITH THE BEST COACHING, AND AGAINST THE BEST COMPETITION. That's what recruits transfers", that is entirely true. That has always been true, but it has only been since certain programs have broadcast and made it clear they are in the market to assemble - however possible - the best players to build the best teams that the parity in parochial HS sports has disappeared, to the detriment of everyone else. It didn’t have to be this way. Parochial schools did not have to cave in and abandon principles. But they have and now the integrity of parochial FB is gone with the wind......................Luca

...Most don’t understand what has been lost in the last few years. They don’t understand what the parochial game did for the kids and the high schools and even the parents. The decades long rivalries, the traditions, the lifetime friendships, the ebb and flow of the programs (both public and private), etc. How beneficial it was for an average high school "athlete" to be able through sustained effort make himself a valuable contributor to a team, while in the process learning what determination and tradition and loyalty and community striving are all about. Things that that average high school kid could carry into adulthood. That was the value of the game, what it did for kids who otherwise would likely not have learned those arduous, priceless lessons. As the saying goes, Ex nihilo nihil fit......................................Luca For those who don't know what's been lost, this is from Dr. Stephen Shoemaker, upon his induction this month, into the Servite Hall of Fame. Shoemaker is an orthopedic surgeon in La Jolla who has worked with many professional athletes during his career. “Returning to Servite for recognition of past accomplishments is truly an honor,” he said. Shoemaker was a standout basketball and football player during his time at Servite who went on to play football at UCLA. “The lessons learned while playing competitive sports transfer seamlessly to life,” he said. “Dedication to a task that is larger than oneself, dependability and camaraderie, dealing with adversity, competition with ethics and honor just to mention a few. The things I learned and the relationships I enjoyed at Servite contributed greatly to the success I’ve had in life.”

I don't know how old Dr. Shoemaker is, but looking at his photo I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't coached by Luca when he first put on a helmet as a Pee-Wee.
