The internet is buzzing with the alleged exodus of MD kids going to Santa Margarita. Steve Fifita, the D-line coach for MD has been names the new DC at SM. Not sure how this falls under the CIF rule of a player not being allowed to follow a coach. So far the name I have heard is a current wide receiver, and rumors of others. Could be interesting to see where kids are coming back from the Christmas break. MDDad, what is your take?

Steve Fifita left Mater Dei after the 2021 season, so the "following the coach" rule would not apply. Yes, Santa Margarita is recruiting their asses off to get as many of our players as they can get, even offering cars in some cases. So far they have two. One was invited to leave, and the other was disgruntled his entire time at MD. Addition by subtraction.

False internet pundits referred to him as a current coach. Is his brother Les Fifita? I suppose now the thinking is that the OC Buckeye players will be channeled to SM.

Les lets his players and families decide where to go. Steven just adds credibility to SM. The players know him and what he’s about. Most of the buckeyes end up in the Trinity but they are fairly evenly dispersed according to the strength of each program.

MD bags a big time WR from Ohio. We're going to have to expand our reach beyond Texas.

What's the fun in that? Isn't it better to bring in outside kids who won't fundraise to take the positions from the local kids that do?

Something like 40% Los Al students do not live within their boundaries. Cypress is similar. Most of the students that come from somewhere else do not play sports. They are there because their parents think they will get a better education than they would at their home school. Probably not the case at CDM or NH. Eliminating transfers would put some schools in jeopardy of losing staff or closing altogether.

How does a player at a public high school achieve athletic eligibility if he does not live in that school's enrollment area?

How does a player at a public high school achieve athletic eligibility if he does not live in that school's enrollment area? Some person on the OC board said he heard Marcus Harris was transferring to Rancho. Any validity to this statement? It’s hard to filter the social media rumors from facts.

Intra district and inter district transfers before freshman year happen everywhere. They just aren't publicized.

Any movement before a kid's freshman year is not a transfer per CIF rules. But 99% of public schools still require a family to live in their enrollment area in order for their son to attend the school (unless the parents are employees of the school - a loophole that Mission Viejo has used for two decades). Those that don't enforce enrollment area rules could almost be called private schools with free tuition.

I wasn't talking about CIF rules. Almost every district allows intra district transfers. They try to block inter district transfers but usually fail because of special accommodations or programs.
