Saw this meme on Facebook: so maybe we can discuss it here. We have a Hispanic councilwoman who is trying to make this into an us versus them thing to bolster her re-election campaign. She castigates whites who are not actively campaigning to end racism in America. My response to her was, we will never completely end racism or any other evil in the world OR in America, specifically. Evil exists because man is basically selfish and prideful (or what I call “sinful”). Obviously some of us are better at shrouding our “sinfulness” than others who practice it openly, but we all have a few bad behaviors we would prefer no one else knew about. The best we can do is hold the individual actors ... of racism, or abortion, or murder, or rape, etc.... but, absent every soul changing, we will never be free from racism <hard stop> my response to that councilwoman: I believe the media has a vested interest in perpetuating conflict between races. Many politicians also see value in keeping tension between us. i welcome your thoughts.

The media will media. It’s the same news cycle every time something like this happens - began with Arbery and will continue for a few weeks.
The current case is terrible, no doubt, but I suspect the social media slacktavist will pipe down once their clout lust is appeased (or their attention runs out).

I haven't seen any evidence that Floyd was killed due to racism.
I have seen a preponderance of evidence that Floyd was killed due to police brutality & malfeasance.
In my opinion, the 2nd is actually worse than the 1st because police are given authority to enforce the law. When that authority is misused and a citizen is killed under the color of that authority, that begins a road to facism.

I cannot escape that officer’s malfeasance against that black man, or why none of the other officers on the scene intervened, although the one I saw in the video clip was Asian (so, NOT white). I wonder if that/those officer(s) have had that kind of situation with white suspects... although I grant you my wonderment doesn’t constitute racist officers. on the other hand, this COULD have been a race-free incident that the media is using to whip up the racial injustice riots across the country...

The people who are rioting are not representative of black Americans. That rogue cop is not representative of policemen. They're outliers - closet Nazis - who when they have an opportunity to release their ugly passions will do so. The response of the overwhelming majority of people is to look at this episode with revulsion and insist that Justice be served, the cop dealt with and appropriate steps be taken to minimize the chances of repeat episodes. This, unfortunately, does not make for headlines.
Politicians who for political advancement promulgate sweeping inflammatory generalizations from these types of episodes - which have always occurred and always will, humanity being what it is - are little better than those who act out those generalizations on the street. They're social enablers, giving diaphanous justification for thugs to be thugs........................Luca

Well Colin Kaepernick has made his opinion known - trendingpolitics.com/colin-kaepernick-praises-violent-riots-in-minneapolis-after-death-of-george-floyd/ It is telling how Colin has no qualms with other peoples property being stolen & destroyed. Why doesn't Mr. Kaepernick invite looters over to his $3 million townhome in NY and allow them to destroy that as well? How about burning down some Nike stores, does that work for you Colin? Please, please, tell the looters to steal Nikes, bite the hand that feeds you. I know Target won't do it because they are too corporate, but it would be eye opening if they ran nationwide ads showing pictures of their employees with the caption "What did we do?". If not nationwide, at least in Minnesota, where I believe they were founded.

"When civility leads to death, revolting is the only logical reaction."
"Revolting"? Really? It's always a good idea to have a dictionary or a thesaurus nearby when you're in over your head.
His writing - which is actually what's revolting here – reminds me of the passages my English teacher wife would read to me from her students trying to sound profound, earnestly believing that one day their immortal insight would appear in Bartlett's Book of Quotation.
I've always loved reading prosaic passages from mediocrities who think they're philosophers. Especially when they don't understand the meaning of their words.................Luca
............By the way, frog, thanks for the use of that word "slacktivist.". I'd never heard it before but it's a very useful term.

It's a perfect word for these times. If it didn't already exist, someone would have to invent it. I had to look it up. Wikipedia states:
"The term appears to have been coined by Dwight Ozard and Fred Clark in 1995 at the Cornerstone Festival. The term was meant to shorten the phrase slacker activism..........."
Which makes it a portmanteau, a combination of 2 words to make a new one....................Luca

I am wondering about Mr. Floyd’s cause of death. He was lying on his side with the officer’s knee pressing down on his neck. That would cause the blood flow to the cartoid artery to be shut off wouldn’t it? Doesn’t that interfere with the heart? Could that be the cause of Mr. Floyd’s death?
Perhaps Luca can help out here?

I believe the senior police officer listed on his report that the cause of death was suicide...

I believe the senior police officer listed on his report that the cause of death was suicide... I don’t think we are talking about the same thing! George Floyd did not commit suicide. The cop killed him by pressing on his neck for about nine minutes. All the reports said that Floyd told the cop he couldn’t breathe, but I asked Luca if it could have been his heart.
