This thread has devolved into a surreal mess. Fauci will probably be remembered as a dedicated public servant...at least by those who use reason and logic...I have no idea what the MDDad's of the world will think nor do I think it matters a great deal. Reading a comment like this, I can only assume... Your assumptions don't help the discussion at all.

I have to agree with you on this, pagan. I think that Dr.Fauci tried his best and his goal was to keep things calm when others were panicking (Remember "If you can keep your head/ when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you……”). I don’t agree that his legacy will be one of incompetence or corruption. He will be appreciated for what he did and tried to do, in my opinion. His fault was one common to physicians: it’s hard to simply admit " I don’t know.” He tried to convey a calming sense of certainty when there was no certainty, merely informed speculation which too often turned out to be incomplete or wrong. There was so much conspiratorial and inaccurate nonsense being purveyed that he somewhat overstepped his bounds in trying to combat it. His was a near impossible task and it was definitely impossible to make everyone happy. It is extremely important to find out the origin of this virus. I thought all along it was too much of a coincidence that the virus was first discovered in Wuhan where the Chinese have a virology laboratory specializing in gain of function research. I cannot quite understand why such research is even done since it seems to me the potential risks are far greater than the benefits (with COVID-19 as an obvious case in point). So I have always suspected, albeit without proof, that that’s where it originated. I also do not believe that it was deliberately released. What would be the point? (" Never assume malice where incompetence will suffice.") If my suspicions are correct, more likely it was a laboratory screw up, since these things are pretty common. What I would fault the Chinese for is not being more forthcoming to the rest of the world by being more open and allowing a satisfactory investigation into that laboratory. Whether it’s because they fear financial reparations, loss of influence or simply an Asian "loss of face" is not clear, but either way their response (whether or not they are responsible) is unforgivable. Over 1 million people have died around the world and we all deserve to know why and how. Perhaps it is my imagination, but you seem to be pushing back against the concept of pressuring the Chinese to be more forthcoming. If the Chinese are responsible for this and they have hidden the fact then the world deserves to know what kind of a government we are dealing with….Luca

Luca, understanding his position is simple - Inverse any opinion on this board. Voila.
It's what trolls do.

Though, if the gain-of-function research hypothesis is true, why wouldn't the Chinese be the first to point the finger at America?
They've been completely hush-hush about the whole thing...

If the Chinese are responsible for this and they have hidden the fact then the world deserves to know what kind of a government we are dealing with….Luca Thank you for your well reasoned and stated opinions. It's a nice change from the rabid idiocy I get from others here. I think the attacks on Fauci are largely the result of people who get their news from morons like Hannity and Carlson, and there is no intelligence or reason to be expected from such people, and I do agree that Fauci's legacy will remain largely unharmed by this nonsense. Unfortunately I can't agree with your statement: "There was so much conspiratorial and inaccurate nonsense being purveyed..." Sadly such rumor-mongering continues unabated, and this forum is evidence of that. I completely agree that the origins of the virus should be investigated and no I see no problem with putting a little pressure on China ( I have no idea why you think I would). I agree that it seems unlikely to be a deliberate release, and so far no one is saying that they have evidence the virus was manipulated in any way. As you say it seems like an accidental release from the lab at Wuhan but we should wait for the results of the investigation to make a decision. Your given reasons for the silence of the Chinese is pretty good, but I wonder why so many people seem surprised by the apparent cover-up. It seems completely within their character to do so. Communists have never been chatty, and I think you need to look no further than the 'loss of face' argument for a reason why....and I think we've known for some time what kind of government they have. I also have to wonder how anxious we'd be to take responsibility if the leak occurred here. If the leak had happened in some secret US government lab what would we know about it?

SO, Fauci is a revered man of integrity. So how do we classify these: That depends on where they came from. If the stated facts are from reputable news sources, and can be verified, then we can classify them differently than if you just made them up. We have no idea from your post which scenario is more likely.

But apparently you can't be bothered to provide evidence for your claims and you just want people to take your word on whatever you're claiming. Not a terribly impressive way to make an argument.

So, if I understand you (which, is by no means a given), you want evidence that supports my opinion that you don't understand the meaning of a word? O.K., I guess here's your evidence: Based on how I have observed you using it, you don't understand the meaning of "respect."

The best you can do is call Hannity and Carlson morons!!! They were right about Hillary, the fake Dossier, The phony Russian collusion, the phony Ukraine collusion, Bidens crime family, Hunter Bidens pay to play scams, Hunters emails, Fauci's emails which prove the Fauci coverup of his funding of the Wuhan Lab. It goes on and on. It would seem you're the moron. Fauci has changed his story more often than he changes his socks. He's the face of the Lefts latest attempt to control the media and the populace.
