Although this 20 year struggle lasted many administrations, its not looking good for the President at the moment..., The Biden administration is preparing for the fall of Kabul and a retreat from any U.S. diplomatic presence in Afghanistan — a stunning reversal of expectations. We engaged the war on terror with gusto and had immediate success bringing down the Taliban. But, our objectives seemingly changed (I wonder if the lynchpin for the change was turning to Iraq and Saddam?) and it was no longer important that we defeat (and capture) those responsible for bringing terrorism to our shores. Eventually, our presence was mistrusted by locals and training the army (of any country) was futile as the enemy was infiltrating those armies to get the training and the weapons. IMO, it is a dumb military move to train your enemies with your plans and strategies. From Iraq, Syria was a miasma of a cluster*ck, and Afghanistan never wanted us there in the first place. Obama basically bent the military over as the Middle East was undoing it's robe when he telegraphed when we would be leaving, and then shot our military in the knees when he didn't follow-through. All that to say, Kabul was always going to fall.

We engaged the war on terror with gusto and had immediate success bringing down the Taliban. Except that we didn't really bring down the Taliban. They are like cockroaches. Unless you kill every last one of them and destroy all their eggs, they will come back in greater numbers than ever when you turn off the lights. And we turned off the lights just a few weeks ago.

Yeah, I only meant their leadership, when we first went in… but you’re right, we did not learn from Russia’s embarrassing ass kicking.

It’s harsh to say it, but we have a habit of hitching our wagon to some real losers, like the South Vietnamese and the Shah of Iran, etc. For some 20 years we’ve been in Afghanistan trying to build up their military, training them and giving them weapons far superior to what the Taliban has.. And all we got out of it was a draw that was sustainable only as long as we kept a presence there. It’s not worth doing that forever and at some point we had to let them fight their own battles……and that military we built up folded like a cheap umbrella in a hurricane.
It seems to me it was always going to be only one of two outcomes. We either stay there forever as the cops or we leave and let the Afghans fight their own battles - and lose. There’s an old saying that if a problem seems to be insoluble then maybe it’s not really a problem. Maybe it’s just reality.
Although it’s hard to see how Biden could’ve done a worse job of it. That overrated, cliche-spewing clown is the epitome of incompetence………………Luca

Word is, he's sending 5000 troops back over there. I'll bet they're thrilled.

So we had 3,500 personnel there to defend the whole country, and now he's sending 5,000 to defend the embassy? That sounds like perfect Biden logic to me. What an utterly Keystonian Kop.

This is not on Biden. Not sure what the objective / exit strategy was, but to Lucas's point, it seems like it was trying to eradicate roaches.
Sounds a lot like the current plan to eradicate a mutating virus.

In the least for all our efforts, like Viet Nam, should we not at least get a South Afghanistan out of this ..?

Joe Biden in July: “The Taliban is not the North Vietnamese army. They’re not remotely comparable in terms of capability. “There's going to be no circumstances where you’re going to see people being lifted off the roof of a US Embassy in Afghanistan.” ( link) August: Chinook helicopter airlifting Diplomats and staff from roof of Kabul Embassy...

Yeah, I'm sure the number that were sent was Biden's idea...I'm sure none of his military advisors had any input at all.
